Bliley Introduces Best-in-Class, Low Phase Noise OCVCXO with Low-g Sensitivity for Microwave Communication, Radar, Navigation and Equipment Systems

Bliley’s NV45AD1725 OCVCXO, with Low-g sensitivity rated at 5 x 10-10 per g/axis, is designed for microwave-frequency systems subject to vibration and environmental effects. The NV45AD1725 yields the best phase noise available for its miniature-package size and features a 100 MHz frequency, thermal stability of +/- 50 ppb, and low-power consumption.

ERIE, Pa. (November 6, 2009) – Bliley Technologies, Inc., a worldwide leader in crystal controlled frequency solutions, has introduced the NV45AD1725 OCVCXO (oven controlled voltage controlled crystal oscillator) configured specifically for ultra low phase noise results in vibration-rich environments.

Packaged with a standard, 1-inch-square footprint and with a .46 inch height, the 100 MHz NV45AD1725 offers the lowest phase noise available in its class, as well as design flexibility for electronics engineers specifying substitute components and upgrades. Cobham Celebrates 75th Anniversary — Press Release

Cobham Celebrates 75th Anniversary

WIMBORNE, United Kingdom – Cobham traces its origin to this day in 1934, when aviation pioneer and innovator Sir Alan Cobham founded Flight Refuelling Ltd. By 1934, Sir Alan Cobham had already established his reputation as an aviation pioneer, passionate about making the aircraft a mainstream means of transport. He came to prominence flying potential commercial airline routes between the UK and India, Africa, and Australia during the 1920s. During the 1930s, he introduced more than a million people to the experience of flight with “Cobham’s Flying Circus”.

Although the company he founded in 1934 started as an air-to-air refuelling specialist and is still the world leader in this field, Cobham today is so much more. Through a combination of organic growth and the acquisition of over 50 companies, the Group’s capabilities are now increasingly focused around C4ISR, safety and survival.

The Group’s products and services have played pivotal roles in world events from the Berlin Airlift to the US and European space programs, NATO operations and relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and China’s Sichuan earthquake in 2008. Cobham is also involved with customers and partners on some of the most important programmes in Aerospace and Defence such as Eurofighter Typhoon, F-35, Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft, A400M and vehicle intercom systems for land based vehicles.

Cobham has produced a commemorative web site and a book dedicated to its employees past and present. His Royal Highness Prince Philip, who knew Sir Alan and Sir Michael Cobham, has kindly written the foreword to this book. In it he states:

“Anyone who has a talent for engineering and the ambition to use it for the benefit of humanity would be well-advised to read this book as a source of inspiration and encouragement. Equally, anyone intending to follow a career in politics might learn some important lessons about the value of engineers and engineering to the creation of wealth and national prosperity.”

The Group’s development over the past 75 years has been guided by only four Chief Executives: Sir Alan Cobham, his son Sir Michael Cobham, Gordon Page CBE, and Allan Cook CBE.

For further information visit www.cobham75.com.

About Cobham:

Cobham’s products and services have been at the heart of sophisticated military and civil systems for 75 years, keeping people safe, improving communications, and enhancing the capability of land, sea, air and space platforms. Oshkosh Corporation Displays Fuel Efficient Military Vehicle at Hybrid Truck Users Forum — Press Release

Oshkosh Corporation Displays Fuel Efficient Military Vehicle at Hybrid Truck Users Forum

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Oct. 26, 2009 — Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) announced today its Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) A3 equipped with ProPulse® diesel electric hybrid system is on display October 27 – 29 at CALSTART’s Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF) in Atlanta. Attendees will be offered rides in the Oshkosh vehicle on Oct. 29 at Turner Field. The Oshkosh ProPulse vehicle provides a substantial fuel economy improvement for the application of a hybrid drivetrain in a military vehicle.

The HEMTT A3 is equipped with the Oshkosh proprietary ProPulse diesel electric hybrid system, a technology currently under various stages of development across several commercial and military Oshkosh vehicle platforms.

“We focused our efforts on optimizing the vehicle design and engine control strategy to maximize fuel economy, and those efforts have paid off significantly,” said Gary Schmiedel, Oshkosh Corporation vice president of Advanced Product Engineering. “We’re sharing the research results for the first time this week because the Hybrid Truck Users Forum brings together the best in industry technology with the U.S. Army. At Oshkosh Corporation, we take a similar approach towards excellence by applying leading technologies with a strong customer focus in an effort to better serve our military customers.”

Earlier this month, the Oshkosh HEMTT A3 outperformed a similar but conventional drive vehicle in multiple scenarios, including a range of steady speeds and aggressive acceleration starts and stops. The HEMTT A3 demonstrated a 24 percent improvement in fuel economy at 60 mph cruising speed and a 33 percent improvement in a start-and-stop-cycle.

In addition to the benefits of increased fuel economy, the Oshkosh HEMTT A3 provides a better crew environment because noise and vibration are reduced. Also, the simplified drivetrain and the resultant flexibility of equipment positioning, allow for increased vehicle capabilities and reduced maintenance requirements. The HEMTT A3 is equipped with a load handling system which can off-load a C-130 aircraft, has a variable height independent suspension and lower center of gravity for increased maneuverability and handling. The HEMTT A3 can export up to 100 kW of clean, military-grade electrical power making the A3 ideally suited to support initial deployment of troops, bring electrical power to remote areas, as well as support recovery missions in the event of a natural disaster.

“We are proud of the initiative and investments member companies like Oshkosh are making to develop new, efficient and clean technologies for heavy-duty and military trucks,” said Bill Van Amburg, senior vice president CALSTART. “Together we will help improve our national security by lessening our dependence on fossil fuels.”

The Oshkosh ProPulse technology can be integrated into any new vehicle design, like the HEMTT A3. Additionally upgrade kits are available for existing vehicles, such as the Oshkosh Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) with OBVP to provide on-board vehicle power (OBVP). The technology also has been integrated on an Oshkosh commercial chassis in a refuse hauling application as part of the Advanced Heavy Hybrid Propulsion System Project sponsored by the Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

AUSA Honors Oshkosh Corporation CEO With Prestigious John W. Dixon Award — Press Release

AUSA Honors Oshkosh Corporation CEO With Prestigious John W. Dixon Award

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Oct. 7, 2009 — The Association for the United States Army (AUSA) today presented Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert G. Bohn with the distinguished John W. Dixon award at the AUSA 2009 Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

Bohn received the award for the company’s continuous contributions to the U.S. Armed Forces and defense industry. “We at Oshkosh are grateful for the opportunity to serve our Armed Forces and understand the great responsibility that comes with that service,” said Robert G. Bohn, Oshkosh Corporation chairman and chief executive officer. “We take great pride in what we do and are mindful every day, in every level of our operations, that the military depends on our products to meet its demanding and ever-evolving challenges. We are also proud to have won the FMTV contract and look forward to delivering more great trucks for our brave Warfighter.”

Most recently, Bohn has made the urgently needed MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) the top priority for Oshkosh Corporation. oshkosh charityOshkosh Defense Exhibits Latest Vehicles, Technologies and Donation Effort at AUSA

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Oct. 5, 2009 — Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK), is displaying the latest in tactical wheeled vehicles and technologies in Washington D.C. today through Wednesday at the annual Association of United States Army (AUSA) meeting and exposition, including the new MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV), the Oshkosh HEMTTA3, Pro-Pulse™ and TAK-4® independent suspension.

Oshkosh is also a supporter of the Armed Forces Foundation sweepstakes, “Rumble With a Cause.” Attendees at the show will be automatically entered in the sweepstakes when making a $10 donation to AFF through the sweepstakes website. Up to twenty entries per person are permitted. Entrants are asked to select entry into either the sweepstakes for the Marine Corps-themed “Semper Fidelis Salute” or the sweepstakes for the Army-themed “American Soldier Salute” motorcycle. No donation is necessary to enter the sweepstakes and winners must meet eligibility requirements. Proceeds will support the Armed Forces Foundation’s mission of supporting active and retired members of the U.S. military and their families.

“Oshkosh Corporation is proud to be at AUSA and show our support and commitment to the Army,” said Andy Hove, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Defense. “We’ve built our reputation on being able to serve the Army’s needs with our vehicles and technologies, and AUSA is a perfect venue to demonstrate once again our commitment to protecting and supporting our men and women in uniform.”

On Wednesday of the three-day expo, AUSA will present the prestigious John W. Dixon award to Oshkosh Corporation Chairman and CEO Robert G. Bohn, for his contributions to national defense and his support of the U.S. Army.

Among the vehicles being displayed, the M-ATV offers durable, best-in-class mobility and superior crew protection for operations on the harsh mountainous terrain and unimproved road networks found in Afghanistan. To date, Oshkosh has received four awards valued at $2.3 billion for 4,296 M-ATVs. Oshkosh will utilize its available capacity and robust manufacturing capabilities to ramp up M-ATV production to 1,000 vehicles per month by December and continue at that rate as needed to meet the U.S. Armed Forces’ urgent need for the vehicle.

In addition to the M-ATV, the company is featuring the following vehicles and technologies at AUSA:

• The Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) A3, a hybrid diesel-electric drive vehicle designed to help transform the Army’s tactical wheeled vehicle fleet and support modularization. It is equipped with the Oshkosh proprietary ProPulse® technology, which allows this HEMTT to export 100kW of military-grade A/C power and improves the vehicle’s fuel efficiency by at least 20 percent compared to other HEMTT models. It will be displayed along with a Load Handling System (LHS) Mobile-Folding Blade Turbine System (M-FBTS) and solar panel mission module concept that produces energy from natural resources to further reduce liquid fuel consumption.

• A demonstration vehicle equipped with multiple advanced Oshkosh technologies, including a ProPulse™ hybrid-electric drivetrain, Command Zone™ computer diagnostics system and a sensor suite from the TerraMax™ autonomous vehicle system.

• An Oshkosh TAK-4® independent suspension system, which is used on all three display vehicles. The TAK-4 system, which Oshkosh is retrofitting on more than 2,400 legacy MRAPs for operations in Afghanistan, has undergone more than 400,000 miles of government testing and results in vehicle off-road mission profile capabilities of 70 percent and higher.

Oshkosh Exceeds M-ATV Delivery Schedule for Third Consecutive Month — Press Release

mrapatv twoOshkosh Exceeds M-ATV Delivery Schedule for Third Consecutive Month

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Oct. 1 2009 — Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) announced today that for the third consecutive month, it has exceeded its contract delivery requirements for MRAP All Terrain Vehicles (M-ATV). The September M-ATV delivery requirement for 100 vehicles was met on September 22, more than one week earlier than required.

Oshkosh Corporation is responding to an urgent call from the U.S. Armed Services for the accelerated delivery of M-ATVs for operations in Afghanistan. Since receiving the first order on June 30, 2009, Oshkosh has delivered ahead of schedule each month, enabling the MRAP Joint Program Office to fly M-ATVs to Afghanistan earlier than initial estimates. Oshkosh’s manufacturing facilities have available production capacity for all current and potential military vehicle programs, including the U.S. Army’s Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV), as well as any production surges.

“The M-ATV program was fast-moving from its inception, and we are answering the Warfighter’s need for this advanced vehicle by providing the government with a rapid delivery schedule,” said Charlie Szews, president and chief operating officer of Oshkosh Corporation. “Oshkosh’s robust manufacturing capabilities, proven experience and highly skilled workforce have helped set the company apart as a leading and reliable supplier of the M-ATV, as well as other medium- and heavy-payload tactical wheeled vehicles for the U.S. military.”

Oshkosh uses an advanced integrated assembly line and has simultaneously produced as many as 10 vehicle models with 29 variations. Design innovations, assembly process improvements and lean manufacturing fuel continuous quality improvement at the company’s facilities.

To date, the company has received orders valued at $2.3 billion for 4,296 M-ATVs, including initial spare parts and support services. The U.S. military flew the first M-ATVs to Afghanistan at the end of September.

The Oshkosh® M-ATV uses the advanced Oshkosh TAK-4® independent suspension system for superior mobility, including a 70 percent off-road profile capability and 16 inches of wheel travel. The TAK-4 system, which has undergone more than 400,000 miles of government testing, is featured on more than 10,000 Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacements (MTVR) used by the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy Seabees, and is being retrofitted on more than 2,400 legacy MRAPs for improved mobility in Afghanistan. The system is also used on the Army’s next-generation Palletized Load System (PLS) and the Marine Corps’ Logistics Vehicle System Replacement (LVSR).

Oshkosh Defense teamed with Plasan North America to provide an advanced armor solution for the M-ATV. Plasan also developed the armor system used on more than 5,000 legacy MRAPs and thousands of Oshkosh MTVR Armored Cabs already in theater.

Oshkosh Defense is the leading manufacturer of both medium and heavy tactical wheeled vehicles in the U.S. defense industry. More than 67,000 military-class vehicles have been produced in the company’s manufacturing facilities.

Thales Pitches New Australian MRAP

The market for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles has grown over the last five years incrementally. The United States and its Allies have bought thousands of the vehicles for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan where the major threat has been from mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). The U.S. military is beginning its winding down of operations in Iraq which will mean less requirement for new MRAP vehicles. The U.S. has also awarded Oshkosh large contracts for a new MRAP-ATV to support their troops in Afghanistan. The world market though for these types of vehicles should be fairly solid as the IED has been demonstrated as a weapon of choice.

Thales in Australia has successfully marketed and sold their larger Bushmaster vehicle to both its home forces as well as The Netherlands for use in Afghanistan. Now it has developed the lighter Hawkei MRAP. This vehicle is targeted towards replacing tactical vehicles like the Land Rover or HUMVEE. It has removable armor to facilitate transportation and is configurable to conduct a variety of missions. Thales is hoping that the Australian military will invest in it to supplement their Land Rover vehicles as well as marketing it to other countries.

There is certainly will continue to be people willing to invest in these type of vehicles especially if it is priced competitively and offers some capabilities that other don’t.

Unmanned Ground Vehicles As An IED Defense

The U.S. Army is investing heavily in all sorts of unmanned aerial and ground vehicles for a variety of missions. The ones entering service so far have been used to collect intelligence and deal with mines, Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) or unexploded ordnance. The systems to defeat the IED threat exist to minimize the exposure of personnel.

The Army is now also looking at autonomous vehicles that could be used to support logistic operations. In Iraq and Afghanistan there is a requirement for a great deal of vehicle activity to move men and supplies. There are just not enough helicopter or tactical transports to go around which forces a reliance on traditional road based truck traffic. These convoys provide a tempting target and as originally the vehicles tended to be lightly armored casualties were significant. That is why the U.S. invested heavily in Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles and up-armored trucks and HUMVEEs.

Now Cnet reports that Oshkosh Corporation took one of their new unmanned ground tactical trucks to Fort Hood for a demonstration of its capabilities. The vehicle was outfitted with several different systems including drive-by-wire, scanning lasers for obstacle detection and a one that feeds data back to human operators.

If the systems are developed and work safely they will reduce U.S. casualties by forgoing the need to have the vehicles crewed. Of course as with everything there is a cost associated with this and the use of unmanned driving systems will increase the cost of what is a fairly cheap truck to move supplies a great deal. It is another example of the U.S.’s willingness to spend money to save lives.

Alion-Operated Centers Publish Special Edition Journal on Power and Energy Technologies and Initiatives

Technology Solutions Company Helps Promote Awareness of Department of Defense Efforts to Improve Energy Security

McLean, Va. – August 25, 2009 – The Department of Defense (DoD) is undertaking the enormous and challenging task of improving energy security through myriad power and energy initiatives. To chronicle some of the technology advancements, ongoing programs, and successful efforts aimed at providing the military with a reliable and secure power and energy supply, two Information Analysis Centers (IACs) collaboratively published: “Powering the Future Force: New Power & Energy Technologies for the Warfighter.”

The Advanced Materials, Manufacturing, and Testing Information Analysis Center (AMMTIAC) and the Weapon Systems Technology Information Analysis Center (WSTIAC), both operated by Alion Science and Technology – an employee-owned technology solutions provider – worked together to publish this special edition journal. With a forward by Alan Shaffer, Executive Director of the DoD’s Energy Security Task Force, this special edition publication highlights topics ranging from wearable power to expeditionary power systems to novel power sources for advanced munitions.

“Energy is a force multiplier – and a limitation. Energy efficiency increases maneuverability, agility, and makes our forces more expeditionary. However, our new systems require ever increasing energy, during a time when getting fuel to forward locations is considered an operation, with vulnerable supply lines requiring additional security forces,” Mr. Shaffer states in the publication’s forward.

Originally distributed to IAC subscribers as a 92-page printed journal, the special edition publication is now available as a free download and features additional content not available in the print version. The table of contents and the expanded digital edition is available at: http://ammtiac.alionscience.com/pdf/AQV4N1.html

“For the Department to succeed in responding to the energy challenge, access to the latest information on energy research is essential,” said Terry Heston, the Defense Technical Information Center’s IAC Program Manager. “DoD IACs are a vital resource in this endeavor. Powering the Future Force is a significant contribution and important first step in the IAC Program’s engagement in addressing this topic.”

The publication was sponsored by the Defense Technical Information Center, ATTN: DTIC-I, 8725 John J. Kingman Rd., Ste 0944, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060-6218. DTIC serves the DoD community as the largest central resource for DoD and government-funded scientific, technical, engineering and business-related information available today. For more than 60 years, DTIC has provided the warfighter and researchers, scientists, engineers, laboratories and universities timely access to more than 2 million publications covering more than 250 subject areas. Its mission supports the nation’s warfighter.
