POWERWAVE HIRES WIRELESS INDUSTRY VETERAN JAKE MACLEOD TO LEAD GOVERNMENT SOLUTIONS BUSINESS
SANTA ANA, Calif., January 13, 2010 – Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global leader in end-to-end wireless coverage and capacity solutions, today announced the appointment of wireless industry veteran Jake MacLeod as vice president government solutions to lead the company’s efforts to address vertical markets for wireless solutions and broadband stimulus efforts in the government, public safety, military and Homeland Security sectors.
MacLeod will oversee the strategic direction, product development and marketing efforts of Powerwave’s government solutions business, ensuring Powerwave is aligned with relevant technology and industry trends that are shaping the future of wireless within the government sector, and expanding the company’s reach to new customers including the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, public safety and other government-related agencies. MacLeod will report to Khurram Sheikh, Powerwave’s Chief Product and Development Officer.
MacLeod’s career in telecommunications spans more than 30 years, throughout which he helped pioneer advances in both the wireline and wireless industries. He serves on numerous industry boards of directors including The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) and Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), and is vice chair of the Communications Research Division of the TIA. MacLeod was named one of the top ten CTOs in the D.C. area in the government contracting industry by ExecBiz Magazine in 2009, and is a featured speaker at numerous wireless industry events.
“This appointment is significant for Powerwave as we expand our focus and commitment to government business and in providing innovative wireless solutions to a wider range of public sector clients,” said Ronald J. Buschur, president and CEO, Powerwave Technologies, Inc. “Jake brings to Powerwave an impressive track record in implementing strategic initiatives and has extensive knowledge of the government market and wireless technology. We are confident that this addition to our management team will allow us to leverage our unique wireless solutions to deliver a compelling value proposition to the government sector.”
“Powerwave is well positioned to assist government entities with their wireless infrastructure needs,” said MacLeod. “Powerwave has a successful track record in supplying critical wireless infrastructure and deploying indoor/outdoor wireless coverage systems to accommodate wireless communications for law enforcement and public safety agencies worldwide. Its ruggedized equipment platforms and ability to support multiple services using a single wireless infrastructure are ideal to meet the needs of the public safety/emergency response market. Powerwave has the capability to support the relevant public safety and commercial wireless frequency bands and provide RF coverage in even the most challenging environments.”
“Through out his 30-plus years in the industry, Jake has demonstrated consistent, strong performance, results and ingenuity,” said the Honorable Governor Tom Ridge, Powerwave Technology Advisory Board member. “I am confident he will provide strong leadership and direction to the team as Powerwave continues to expand its commitment to the government sector.”
MacLeod boasts a lengthy and illustrious career in telecommunications that mirrors the industry’s evolution from wireline to wireless. At the beginning of his career, he participated in the original cellular telephone system designs for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in San Antonio, Dallas and Austin, Texas. Following this, he became the second employee of PageNet/CellNet and vice president of Engineering for the cellular division, where he and his teams designed more than 135 cellular network systems including San Francisco, and filed them with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). During this time, MacLeod was asked to become the Chairman of the Operational Relationships Committee at the FCC and wrote the regulations that governed the interactions between wireline and non-wireline companies.
Following this, he was instrumental in establishing the cellular division for Hughes Network Systems, where he designed and established cellular and WLL systems in areas ranging from central Russia to Indonesia as well as fifty seven markets in the U.S.
He also led development efforts in the field, work which took him around the world – including into Baghdad in 2003, where he led Bechtel Communications’ efforts to revamp the Iraqi telecoms network, designing and replacing 12 wire centers (equivalent to 240,000 POTS lines) in a period of 120 days – an unprecedented achievement in telephony. The team then went on to replace the Air Traffic Control System at Baghdad International Airport.
Most recently, MacLeod was principal vice president, chief technology officer and Bechtel fellow at Bechtel Corporation. In his role there, he was responsible for Bechtel’s communications engineering services, including all aspects of technical design from network planning to commercial system optimization. During his tenure at Bechtel, he initiated and developed the company’s RF and network planning team which grew to more than 150 world-class engineers, and designed and established two world-class telecoms laboratories to provide clients with applied research and development services ranging from interoperability testing to product characterization.
While there, MacLeod led engineering efforts to further the advancement of various wireless protocols, including UMTS, HSDPA, Node B Hotels, WiMAX and Intuitive Networks, and hosted the first WiMAX 802.16e interoperability testing in North America in September 2006, involving more than 16 manufacturers and 95 global technologists.
MacLeod holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas in Austin.
