Cobham Enables Airbus A330 Air-to-Air Refuelling Flight Demonstrations — Press Release

Cobham Enables Airbus A330 Air-to-Air Refuelling Flight Demonstrations

WIMBORNE, United Kingdom – Cobham air-to-air refuelling pods have successfully demonstrated the ability to transfer fuel from the Airbus Military A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) to Spanish Air Force F-18s with a series of “probe-to-drogue” contacts during recent flight trials.

The 905E refuelling pods, built by Cobham Mission Equipment at Wimborne, UK, represent the Company’s latest generation Aerial Refuelling System, which is the first and only hose & drogue system in the world to employ a dual redundant hose response system — a major contributor to world leading mission availability. During a series of contacts conducted during November 2009, the refuelling system transferred fuel to receiver aircraft and demonstrated effective hose response throughout the trials.

“These ‘wet contact’ flight trials are a major milestone in the development of the A330 MRTT’s tanker capability,” said Iain Gibson, vice president of Cobham Mission Equipment. “This achievement reinforces Cobham’s expertise and position as the world leader in delivering air refuelling solutions to meet the strategic and tactical tanker requirements of air forces around the globe.”

The Royal Australian Air Force A330MRTT platform used for these flight tests is similar in configuration to the solution that Northrop Grumman intends to propose to the US Air Force in response to the KC-X Tanker requirement. The A330 MRTT with 905E pods has also been selected for the UK MoD FSTA programme, the Saudi Arabia Air Force and the United Arab Emirates Air Force.

TALON Laser-Guided Rocket Team Completes First Guided Test Flights
September 11, 2009

YUMA PROVING GROUND, Ariz. -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) and Emirates Advanced Investments (EAI) completed the first guided test flights of the TALON Laser-Guided Rocket. The TALON LGR rounds hit a 1.5 meter (4.9 feet) square target during both tests, exceeding accuracy requirements at ranges of 3.7 km and 5 km (2.3 and 3.1 statute miles).

The TALON LGR is an affordable, semi-active laser guidance and control kit that connects directly to the front of 2.75 inch unguided rockets currently in U.S. and international inventories. The TALON LGR program is part of a cooperative development agreement with EAI of the United Arab Emirates.

"These tests validate our low-cost development approach for a reliable precision guidance kit for the 2.75 inch rocket and confirm we are on track to have a qualified product in production in 2010," said Dr. Taylor Lawrence, president of Raytheon Missile Systems. "TALON LGR fills a critical need for attack helicopters and other platforms by giving warfighters a precision weapon that provides pinpoint lethality and reduces collateral damage."

The success of the guided flight tests will lead to live firings from the AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopter.

"I am very excited to report that the TALON LGR program passed another key milestone event and is keeping track with our compact schedule and fielding plans for the helicopter programs," said Cory Mahanna, EAI senior advisor.

The TALON LGR is fully compatible with existing airborne and ground laser designators and requires no modifications to the rocket launcher. It fills the critical operational capability gap between unguided rockets and guided heavy anti-tank missiles.

"EAI and RMS are working together on this innovative program, combining the skills and assets of two countries to bring a world-class system to the United Arab Emirates armed forces and allies," said Hussain Al Hammadi, EAI's chief executive officer. "I am very pleased with the success this program is achieving."

The Raytheon-EAI cooperative development agreement includes a follow-on production proposal to manufacture TALON LGRs in both the U.S. and the United Arab Emirates beginning in 2010. TALON LGRs will be initially fielded with the United Arab Emirates Land Forces and launched from its AH64-D Longbow fleet.

EAI continues to be the region's leader in providing modernized defense capabilities to the United Arab Emirates.

Raytheon Company, with 2008 sales of $23.2 billion, is a technology and innovation leader specializing in defense, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world. With a history of innovation spanning 87 years, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing; effects; and command, control, communications and intelligence systems, as well as a broad range of mission support services. With headquarters in Waltham, Mass., Raytheon employs 73,000 people worldwide.

The Airbus Military A330 MRTT Has Successfully Performed First Contacts Using A New Generation Of Under-wing Hose And Drogue Refuelling Pods

mrtt-oneThe Airbus Military A330 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) has completed another major milestone performing successfully a series of dry contacts using the new generation Cobham 905E hose and drogue refuelling pods, located under the wings. The receiver aircraft was a Spanish Air Force F/A-18A+ fighter.

The system performed well in hose extension and retraction, and showed good hose response in the contact as well as stability during pre-contact and when connected.

This new refuelling pod is a development of the 907E pod already in service with the Canadian and German air forces on their A310 MRTTs. The pods can each deliver up to 420 US gal/min (1600 litres/min) through a 90 ft (27.4 m) hose, and are controlled from a state-of-the-art Fuel Operator Console located in the cockpit.

“The next steps in the flight test program involve more contacts with the new hose and drogue refuelling pod and the advanced Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS), refuelling a variety of receivers that will include French, Portuguese and Spanish small and large receiver aircraft. This flight test phase will lead us to the completion of military certification, and final qualification with our customer” said Miguel Morell, Vice President Airbus Military Derivative Programmes.

The A330 MRTT has been selected by the air forces of Australia, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and was chosen last year by the U.S. Air Force for its recapitalization of the service’s aging tanker fleet.
