The Navy awarded Lockheed Martin a contract to begin Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) of the new radar for the E-2D carrier based Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft. The E-2D is an upgrade of the venerable E-2C system that has been in use for thirty years. The contract has a value of over $170 million for four radar systems.
The E-2D has begun production recently. The APY-9 has longer range and better discrimination then the previous radars on the aircraft. Once LRIP is complete with the necessary exit criteria demonstrated the system will enter Full Rate production with seventy-five systems planned.
Australian AEW Aircraft To Be Supported By Manufacturer: Boeing

It was announced that Australia had awarded a contract to Boeing (BA) to provide service and support to the new Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft being purchased by the Pacific nation. The new aircraft is based on the 737 airliner and is fitted with a variety of radars and communications gear. The five year contract is worth over $600 million if all options are exercised. Boeing has been building these aircraft for the last few years and the six when delivered will provide a significant upgrade to the Royal Australian Air Force’s capabilities.
The contract will be executed by Boeing’s subsidiary in Australia and will lead to the creation of a few hundred jobs. The contract is a Performance Based Logistics (PBL) contract similar to what the U.S. military has been using recently. The program not only includes the aircraft, but training and mission planning elements as well. Two aircraft have been delivered to date.
U.S. Air Force and MDA To Net Sensors
Raytheon was awarded a contract last week to begin prototype development of an architecture to integrate U.S. Air Force and Missile Defense Agency (MDA) sensors. The contract is only worth $3 million so this idea is only at the very beginning of development. The Air Force operates the strategic space sensors for the United States. MDA has invested in a series of radars and other systems based on sea and land to support their mission. From the sound of it this contract is to see if a system may be built that integrates data from both sets of sensors and displays them together.
This capability exists already but it may not be in one system and may require some interface between humans. This will aid in sorting out targets and perhaps even if it works out get good enough data to support fire control solutions. Of course like with many of these kind of development programs it may prove hard to do.
Royal Navy Awards BVT Surface Fleet Support Contract

The United Kingdom faced with growing delays in constructing their two new aircraft carriers and amid concerns of declining investment in their work force awarded BVT Surface Fleet a support contract for the new class of Type 45 destroyers. The total contract is worth over $600 million and will last seven years. The contract calls for BVT Surface Fleet to centrally manage the support and maintenance of the ships.
BVT Surface fleet is the builder of the ships as well. The Type 45 is a new air defense ship to replace the Type 42 class of Falkland Islands fame. They are almost fifty percent larger then the older ships and carry a modern suite of radars and missiles jointly developed with other European countries. The ship also has a stealthy design and has a reduced radar signature.
England had let a contract to begin construction of two new aircraft carriers but due to the financial situation of the country these have seen delays. This has led to concerns of job losses and this contract is one way of helping to prevent those kind of issues.
Raytheon Get Civil Air Traffic Control Contract

The Department of Transportation awarded Raytheon a contract to develop a system to track airline flights in flight. The AP reports that the goal of this system is to better utilize available air space as more and more aircraft fly commercially. No value for the contract was given. Raytheon has been making air traffic control radars for military and civil applications for years and this work seems to be an extension of that. The U.S. government has been investing over the last several years in new systems for installation at airfields for air traffic control. One of the goals of this new contract is to integrate a variety of existing surveillance and tracking systems. The amount of aircraft flying in the U.S. air space has grown considerably over the last few decades and some busier airports have issues with fitting in all of the planned flights.
MDA Awards Boeing Contract for Missile Defense

The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) awarded Boeing the FY09 option to continue work on the Ground Based Mid-Course Defense program. Business Week reports that the contract is worth about $250 million. This is the system that used to be called National Missile Defense (NMD) with sensors and missiles based in Alaska. There are also other radars and sensor scattered across the globe. The contract has an FY10 option included in it as well. There have been some rumblings from the Democrats that this is a program they are looking at to significantly cut in the future. SmartBrief reports that Senator Levin has discussed this as an option for the next budget.
