Oshkosh Corporation Displays Fuel Efficient Military Vehicle at Hybrid Truck Users Forum — Press Release

Oshkosh Corporation Displays Fuel Efficient Military Vehicle at Hybrid Truck Users Forum

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Oct. 26, 2009 — Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) announced today its Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) A3 equipped with ProPulse® diesel electric hybrid system is on display October 27 – 29 at CALSTART’s Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF) in Atlanta. Attendees will be offered rides in the Oshkosh vehicle on Oct. 29 at Turner Field. The Oshkosh ProPulse vehicle provides a substantial fuel economy improvement for the application of a hybrid drivetrain in a military vehicle.

The HEMTT A3 is equipped with the Oshkosh proprietary ProPulse diesel electric hybrid system, a technology currently under various stages of development across several commercial and military Oshkosh vehicle platforms.

“We focused our efforts on optimizing the vehicle design and engine control strategy to maximize fuel economy, and those efforts have paid off significantly,” said Gary Schmiedel, Oshkosh Corporation vice president of Advanced Product Engineering. “We’re sharing the research results for the first time this week because the Hybrid Truck Users Forum brings together the best in industry technology with the U.S. Army. At Oshkosh Corporation, we take a similar approach towards excellence by applying leading technologies with a strong customer focus in an effort to better serve our military customers.”

Earlier this month, the Oshkosh HEMTT A3 outperformed a similar but conventional drive vehicle in multiple scenarios, including a range of steady speeds and aggressive acceleration starts and stops. The HEMTT A3 demonstrated a 24 percent improvement in fuel economy at 60 mph cruising speed and a 33 percent improvement in a start-and-stop-cycle.

In addition to the benefits of increased fuel economy, the Oshkosh HEMTT A3 provides a better crew environment because noise and vibration are reduced. Also, the simplified drivetrain and the resultant flexibility of equipment positioning, allow for increased vehicle capabilities and reduced maintenance requirements. The HEMTT A3 is equipped with a load handling system which can off-load a C-130 aircraft, has a variable height independent suspension and lower center of gravity for increased maneuverability and handling. The HEMTT A3 can export up to 100 kW of clean, military-grade electrical power making the A3 ideally suited to support initial deployment of troops, bring electrical power to remote areas, as well as support recovery missions in the event of a natural disaster.

“We are proud of the initiative and investments member companies like Oshkosh are making to develop new, efficient and clean technologies for heavy-duty and military trucks,” said Bill Van Amburg, senior vice president CALSTART. “Together we will help improve our national security by lessening our dependence on fossil fuels.”

The Oshkosh ProPulse technology can be integrated into any new vehicle design, like the HEMTT A3. Additionally upgrade kits are available for existing vehicles, such as the Oshkosh Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) with OBVP to provide on-board vehicle power (OBVP). The technology also has been integrated on an Oshkosh commercial chassis in a refuse hauling application as part of the Advanced Heavy Hybrid Propulsion System Project sponsored by the Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Oshkosh Defense Awarded $801 Million Delivery Order for New and Recapitalized HEMTTs, PLS Trailers –Press Release

HEMTTOshkosh Defense Awarded $801 Million Delivery Order for New and Recapitalized HEMTTs, PLS Trailers

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Sept. 29, 2009 — Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK), announced today that its Defense division has received a delivery order valued at $801 million from the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command Life Cycle Management Command (TACOM LCMC) for more than 2,450 new and recapitalized Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks (HEMTT) and Palletized Load System Trailers (PLST). Work is expected to be completed by May 2011.

The delivery order calls for Oshkosh Defense to produce more than 1,190 new next-generation HEMTT A4s, more than 180 new HEMTT A2s and more than 80 PLSTs for the U.S. Army. Oshkosh also will deliver more than 1,020 recapitalized HEMTT A4s.

“As an industry-leading designer and manufacturer of tactical wheeled vehicles and the Army’s Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles (FHTV), Oshkosh continues to deliver high-performance vehicles and respond to our customer’s needs in a timely manner,” said Robert G. Bohn, Oshkosh Corporation chairman and chief executive officer. “Our recapitalization services complement our robust manufacturing capabilities and ultimately provide like-new vehicles to our soldiers at a lower cost to the taxpayer.”

Oshkosh has produced more than 67,000 military-class vehicles at its facilities, including more than 30,000 FHTV vehicles. Oshkosh has the available capacity, highly skilled workforce and proven manufacturing capability to deliver this FHTV order as well as vehicles for other Army and Defense programs, including the MRAP All Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) and Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV).

The Oshkosh® HEMTT’s 13-ton payload and off-road capabilities make it the backbone for the U.S. Army’s logistics fleet. Since its introduction in 1985, the HEMTT has helped keep the Army on the move during major conflicts such as Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. Improvements to create the HEMTT A4 include: a fully air-conditioned and armor-ready cab; more powerful drivetrain; improved suspension; and other structural changes to make installation of add-on armor in the field quicker and easier.

Built to load and unload a variety of cargo, the PLS is designed to meet the U.S. Army’s distribution and resupply needs in even the most challenging military missions. The PLS truck and trailer form a self-contained system that reduces the need for forklifts or other material-handling equipment. Additionally, they both carry a demountable cargo bed, also known as a flatrack that features a 16.5-ton payload capacity.

Through Oshkosh’s remanufacturing and recapitalization services, heavily used vehicles are returned to Oshkosh, stripped to their frame rails, completely rebuilt to like-new condition and upgraded to the new A4 configuration. Recapitalized vehicles are considered to have zero miles and zero hours, at a significantly reduced cost compared to new vehicles. These vehicles are put through the same road tests, performance tests and inspection procedures as new vehicles before being delivered with the same bumper-to-bumper warranty provided for new HEMTTs.
