Air Force buys sounding rockets

Alliant Techsystems was awarded a contract by the US Air Force to provide sounding rockets for it and NASA’s use. See a press release here. Sounding rockets tend to be small, single stage rockets that stay suborbital. They can be used to simulate targets for ballistic missile defense tests and experiments, and also support NASA activities and experiments. One common use before the Test Ban Treaty was to collect data from nuclear tests in the Pacific and the American West.

DoD awards contract for engineering services at ranges

Orbital won a contract to provide engineering and analytical services to all three US armed services at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR). They are also part of a team supporting efforts at Wallops Range in Virginia which is used a great deal by NASA. See the story here. The contract, called Theoretical Studies and Engineering Services (TSER), will support all developmental activities at WSMR. This range is used to support air and ballistic missile defense tests.

Congress now lobbies for KC-X to be based in their states

No matter who wins the contract state delegations are lobbying the Air Force to base the new tanker in their states. See The Hill for more on this. Not only are states choosing sides in which contractor should get the contract, see this previous post and this one as well, they are also trying to get the new aircraft based locally. Read more
