Goodrich Delivers 2,000th Helicopter Health and Usage Management System (HUMS)
Diagnostic health management system saves time, money for military, commercial helicopters
CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 11, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Goodrich Corporation’s (NYSE:GR) Sensors and Integrated Systems business in Vergennes, Vt. marked the delivery of its 2,000th helicopter health and usage management system (HUMS) in a ceremony March 8, 2010 attended by employees and U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT). Leahy has supported the company in winning more than $100 million in contracts to develop and deploy the HUMS systems for a number of helicopter platforms for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps.
“I am incredibly proud to mark this day with the men and women of Goodrich,” said Leahy. “2,000 HUMS units are a win for Vermont, the Department of Defense, and our men and women in uniform. These life-saving, money-saving devices keep our helicopters flying safely and have been at the heart of this region’s economy.”
Goodrich Sensors and Integrated Systems vice president Gary Loftus described how a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter unit, fully equipped with HUMS, recently set a new record for numbers of hours flown in a 12-month period and saved taxpayers $45 million in maintenance costs. “The HUMS units give feedback to mechanics that enable them to catch big problems while they are still small, inexpensive problems,” Loftus explained. “They also catch problems while the helicopter is either on the ground or in time to get the helicopter to the ground safely. Our employees are proud of the role they play in helping our warfighters save lives, time and money.”
Goodrich’s Health and Usage Management Systems (HUMS) give mechanics feedback on a helicopter’s engine performance, structural performance and rotor performance – allowing a helicopter to be serviced before major system failures. Before the use of HUMS units, helicopters were routinely taken out of service for unnecessary preventative maintenance. The units are onboard a variety of military and commercial helicopters including the U.S. Army’s UH-60 Black Hawk and CH-47 Chinook, the U.S. Marine Corps’ CH-53E Super Stallion, and Sikorsky’s commercial S-76D® and S-92 aircraft.

Northrop Grumman’s Bat(TM) Unmanned Aircraft System Successfully Completes First Flight
Northrop Grumman's Bat(TM) Unmanned Aircraft System Successfully Completes First FlightFebruary 25, 2010
SAN DIEGO – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) announced today that it has flown the first in a new series of Bat™ unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in January. Configured with a 12-foot wingspan, the Bat™-12 incorporates a highly-reliable Hirth engine as well as a low acoustic signature five-blade propeller. The new configuration increases the mission portfolio of Northrop Grumman's scalable Bat™ UAS product line. Northrop Grumman has been engaged in the development of unmanned systems for more than sixty years, delivering more than 100,000 unmanned solutions to military customers across the world.
Since acquiring the Bat™ product line from Swift Engineering in April 2009, Northrop Grumman has implemented an aggressive demonstration schedule for the Bat™ family of aircraft to expand flight operations and military utility for numerous tactical missions. During recent testing, the 12-foot and 10-foot wingspan Bat™ were each successfully launched from an AAI Shadow® UAS launcher and autonomously operated from a single ground control station before recovery via net. As a communications relay using Northrop Grumman's Software Defined Tactical Radio, Bat™ has also demonstrated its capacity to provide beyond line-of-sight tactical communications relay for ground forces in denied environments, a critical role in irregular warfare.
Recently, the Bat™ UAS has been integrated and tested with new
payloads and systems including a T2 Delta dual payload micro-gimbal
from Goodrich Corporation's Cloud Cap Technology Inc., Sentient Vision
Systems' Kestral real-time moving target indicator, and short wave
infrared camera from Goodrich. In February, payload integration and
testing was expanded to include ImSAR's Nano-SAR-B fused with Cloud
Cap's T2 gimbal in a cursor-on-target acquisition mode.
Ideally suited to an irregular warfare environment, Bat™offers
real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, communications
relay, and future capabilities in a modular system that is affordable,
organic, persistent, runway independent, and fully autonomous.
Bat™ is a wholly owned trademark of Northrop Grumman Corporation.

C-130 Fleet Upgrade with New Goodrich Boltless Wheels and Carbon Brakes Will Benefit U.S. Air Force, International Operators
New equipment to offer significant performance, cost, and maintainability advantages
SINGAPORE, Feb. 1, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — SINGAPORE AIRSHOW — Goodrich Corporation (NYSE:GR) is rapidly accomplishing program objectives under its contract with the U.S. Air Force to upgrade the service’s C-130 transport fleet with new boltless wheels and carbon brakes. Goodrich’s Aircraft Wheels and Brakes team completed the critical design review 60 days after contract award. Goodrich is currently under contract to perform qualification activities, support flight testing, and provide retrofit equipment for the Air Force’s C-130 fleet. Qualification activities are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2011, followed by initial hardware deliveries to the Air Force.
The upgrade program is progressing rapidly in part because Goodrich performed much of the pre-work design and development activities prior to the contract award. Jeff Atkinson, director of military programs, Goodrich Aircraft Wheels and Brakes, said, “The Air Force required us to conduct extensive design and development testing of our candidate hardware prior to contract award in order to fully substantiate our proposal.
“Our C-130 carbon brakes are designed to last eight times longer and weigh 20 percent less than the current steel brakes, and a tire change using Goodrich’s C-130 boltless wheel takes 80 percent less time than the current bolted wheel,” continued Atkinson. “We are seeing strong international interest in the upgrade because of the significant weight and maintenance savings, and expect to begin international deliveries in late 2011. Our low-risk design and validation approach combined with advanced aircraft wheel and brake technologies will provide the worldwide C-130 community with significant performance, cost and maintainability benefits throughout the life of the fleet.”
Goodrich DURACARB® carbon braking systems provide lighter weight, longer life, higher performance and lower cost of ownership compared to steel braking systems. Goodrich boltless aircraft wheels employ a lock-ring design dramatically lowering maintenance time and cost, as well as parts count, when compared to traditional bolted aircraft wheels. Goodrich aircraft wheels and brakes are in service on more than 20,000 military, commercial, regional and business aircraft produced by aircraft manufacturers such as Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Cessna, Embraer, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman.
