The United States government acting for itself and its Allies awarded a contract to Lockheed Martin for the next procurement of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). The $2.1 billion contract option restructured an existing advanced procurement contract into a Cost Plus Incentive Fee (CPIF). It was the third option to an existing Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) contract.
As part of this option seventeen aircraft were ordered for delivery by the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2012. Seven of the JSF will be for the U.S. Air Force and seven for the U.S. Marine Corps. One was purchased for Norway and two for Britain as part of the several JSF international partners.

Fox Business reports that SAIC reached an annual revenue of over $10 billion when it reported its Fiscal Year 2009 results. SAIC is one of the top ten defense contractors and primarily provides engineering and consulting services to the Pentagon. Last year it generated an operating income of $776 million which is a growth of 15% over 2008. The company also provided strong guidance for 2010 due to a backlog of almost $17 billion in contracts.

Secretary of Defense Gates testified today to Congress as he continues his role with the new Obama administration. Reuters reports that Gates said the KC-X tanker competition would restart this spring with an expected award date in the first or second quarter of Fiscal Year 2010. If you remember the original contract was awarded to a team of Northrop Grumman and EADS but Boeing protested and the GAO upheld it. The original plan to conduct a recompete in late 2008 was postponed with a decision to wait for a new administration. One key change is that DoD will handle the proposal and source selection instead of the U.S. Air Force.
Army awards option for UH-60 aircraft
Filed under: Contract Awards, Sikorsky, U.S. Army, production program
The Hartford Courant announced that Sikorsky was awarded a contract option for 6 UH-60M and 2 HH-60. This is probably a FMS option, but no details were given. Usually the full years of aircraft are bought in the Fall after Congress passes the Defense Appropriation Bill. An incremental award during the Fiscal Year may be due to FMS or the receipt of supplemental funding. A key part of any defense procurement contract is that the more you buy in a year the cheaper they are, so it also might be to get the Army a price break.
