Austrian Air Force successfully reaches 1,500 flying hours
The Eurofighter Typhoons in service with the Österreichische Luftstreitkräfte, Austria’s Joint Armed Forces Command have successfully reached the 1,500 flying hours milestone.
This success came to prove the important role the aircraft plays in the air policing task within the Austria’s defence system. In 33 Priority ‘A’ missions, the Austrian Air Force have repeatedly safeguarded the Austrian Air Space whilst 240 Priority ‘B’ operations were accomplished to ensure constant air surveillance.
With the Eurofighter Typhoon as the best and most effective defence system available, the Austrian Armed Forces are capable of providing active Air Security 24 hours a day, seven days a week for many years to come.
The recent task for the Austrian Eurofighter Typhoons to defend the air space above the World Economic Forum in Davos as well as the deployment during the Euro 2008 football championship in
Austria and Switzerland, demonstrated perfectly the interoperability of their Alpine Air defence system.

Spain celebrates 10,000 flying hours with the Eurofighter Typhoon
The Spanish Air Force have reached a key milestone as their Eurofighter Typhoon fleet achieved 10,000 flying hours. The event was marked in a ceremony held at Morón Air Base, in Southern Spain, hosted by Base Commander for Morón and Squadron 11, Colonel Francisco Javier Fernández Sánchez. In attendance were a variety of local companies who work on the Eurofighter Typhoon programme, including EADS CASA, INDRA and ITP, who provide engines as part of the Eurojet consortium. The 10,000th hour came during a training mission of Ala 113 at the base which received its first Eurofighter Typhoon – or C.16 as it is known within the Ejercito de l’Aire – in October 2003.
The Typhoon aircraft is used by the Air Force for air defence and air interception roles, protecting and defending national air space 24 hours a day, fully operational seven days a week from January 2008. Morón air base operates with two Squadrons. Squadron 113 is an operational conversion unit, providing among other roles Typhoon pilot training, whilst Squadron 111 is the main front line unit to provide the Spanish Air Force with the necessary offensive and defensive capabilities to accomplish international tasks and fulfill the Spanish defense policy.
The Spanish Air Force has received so far 28 of the 87 Eurofighter Typhoons expected. Another two Squadrons will be equipped with the C.16 in the future: 14 Wing located on Albacete Air Force Base will see the Eurofighter replace the Mirage F-1 and 112 Squadron which will be the second operational squadron in 11 Wing.
This significant achievement by the Spanish Air Force serves to reaffirm the operational and industrial success of the Eurofighter programme as well as the importance of the aerospace industry in Spain.

England Continues Contract Awards With Rolls-Royce Engine Maintenance

Over the last week or so the English Ministry of Defence has awarded several major contracts. Some of these like that for the new aircraft carriers are to continue the modernization of the U.K.’s armed forces. Late last week they announced one to maintain current capabilities. This was a ten year deal to Rolls-Royce to provide the logistics support for the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon fighter and attack aircraft. The contract could be worth over $1.5 billion in the end.
The Eurofighter Typhoon program has been very successful with sales to several European countries and Saudi Arabia. In England the biggest partner for the manufacturing is BAE Systems. There had been some talk due to their budget problems of the U.K. delaying their latest order but in the end they went through with it. The aircraft makes a substantial contribution to the U.K. aerospace industry.

The 200th Eurofighter Typhoon produced by the four partner companies of the European consortium, was delivered by EADS Deutschland to the German Luftwaffe today during a ceremony held in Manching, close to Munich, Germany. This milestone makes the Eurofighter Typhoon the only new generation multi-role aircraft to reach the impressive figure of 200 examples in service.
The Typhoons – produced by EADS Deutschland, EADS CASA, BAE Systems and Alenia Aeronautica – are now in service with 12 units in six air forces replacing 11 aircraft types, thus confirming that the Eurofighter is not only the best performing multi-role aircraft available on the market but also the most effective and best value solution to meet the air defence requirements of air forces and nations worldwide. To date the fleet has flown over 70,000 flying hours in total with above average operational availability and unmatched operational performances.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is the choice of the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Austrian Air Forces which have in total ordered 707 aircraft. Recently, four Royal Air Force Typhoon aircraft flew a record breaking flight of 18 hours to the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Sea, to take over Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) duties from the Tornado F3s. In similar operational roles, the Luftwaffe has been on NATO air policing duties in the Baltic states; the Italian Air Force is carrying out air policing duties over Albania and the Austrian Air Force – that has received all 15 ordered aircraft – provided security for the air space over a NATO Defence Ministers event in Slovakia.

Eurofighter: 600 million euro contract signed to support the Italian Air Force fleet
Eurofighter GmbH has today signed a five year contract worth more than 600 million Euros with NETMA (NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency) to provide an integrated support solution service to the Italian Air Force’s Typhoon fleet for a period of five
years.
The contract work will be led by Eurofighter Partner Company Alenia Aeronautica, who will undertake the job on behalf of Eurofighter GmbH together with its suppliers SELEX Galileo, SELEX Communications and ELETTRONICA.
Eurofighter, its partner companies and suppliers have been working alongside the Italian Ministry of Defence for the past 18 months in a partnered approach to develop an Integrated Supply Chain Management Service (ISCMS) support solution. This collaboration will ensure
the best possible performance of the aircraft and will sustain the high operational availability shown by the Typhoon fleet in Italy, delivering substantial cost savings for the customer.
The ISCMS contract, meets the Eurofighter Typhoon requirement to reduce maintenance costs as proposed by the NETMA nations providing the customer with a value for money service based solutions. These include avionic equipment availability, repair of general systems equipment, provision of consumables and the maintenance of aircraft ground equipment. This will lead to a reduction in costs, improved availability of equipment and the transfer of risk to industry; traditionally held by the customer.
This deal draws on best practice and lessons learnt from previous in-service support contracts and underpins the commitment of Eurofighter GmbH, its partner companies and supplier companies to deliver an integrated in-service support solution to the customer Air
Forces.
The Contract will support Italian Air Force technical and logistical support activities at the air bases of Grosseto and Gioia del Colle and at 1st RMV, Reparto Manutenzione Velivoli of Cameri, the main logistic base of the Italian Air Force. Enzo Casolini, Eurofighter CEO said “This contract, similar to the one signed recently to support the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon fleet, is the best example of the commitment from Eurofighter to answer the customer request for a new concept of technical support. Today the Typhoon is a mature platform. The lessons learnt, the excellent performance of the aircraft in service and the high operational availability of the Typhoon fleets has enabled us to evolve our support of logistical activities – a process that will enable us to continually evolve the services we offer both our current customers and future export customers”.

Austrian Eurofighter Typhoons on duty for NATO’s Defence Ministers meeting in Bratislava, Slovakia
The Austrian Air Force’s Eurofighter Typhoons were significantly involved in air policing missions during meetings of NATO’s Defence Ministers held in Bratislava, Slovakia, on Thursday 22 and Friday 23 October 2009.
The air policing over the meetings in Slovakia was another demonstration of the interoperability of the Typhoon with NATO assets and as the centre to European air defence. The Austrian Typhoon’s role was to collaborate with the Slovakian Air Force to protect the air space from any possible threat including “slow movers” such as helicopters and light aircraft which are difficult to track with conventional assets.
As stated by the Austrian Ministry for Defence “The support of these aircraft ensures the best possible protection of participants and the local population against air threats”. It would not be possible to carry out such events without adequate airspace surveillance.
Austria has recently taken delivery of the last of its 15 ordered Eurofighter Typhoons and the aircraft already plays an important part in monitoring Austria’s airspace.
Even though the Eurofighter system is still in its introductory phase in Austria, it has already clocked up more than 1100 flight hours and performed around 1300 flights. A total of 26 “alpha priority” missions have already been flown by the Austria Air Force’s Typhoon this year. Since entering into service, the Eurofighter jets have lived up to all expectations and are successfully helping to protect the British, Germany, Italian, Spanish and Austrian air spaces. The Austrian Air Force has previously used the Eurofighter Typhoon during the 2008 European Football Championships and the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Eurofighter: the Italian Air Force 4th Stormo reach 10,000 flight hours with the Eurofighter Typhoon
The 4th Air Wing of the Italian Air Force have reached the key milestone of 10,000 flight hours with the Eurofighter Typhoon.
Based in Grosseto, in central Italy, the 4th Air Wing was the first Italian Air Force unit to receive the Typhoon in 2004. To celebrate the event, which was attended by the Italian Air Force’s Chief of Staff Daniele Tei, one of the aircraft from the squadron sported a special paint scheme on its fin.
Italian’s Typhoons are used for the vital role of assuring the security of Italy’s national air space.
The Italian Air Force assures surveillance and defence of the national air space 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, through an integrated system of radar, aircraft and missile systems, with the systems of the other NATO member countries. In addition to Grosseto’s 4th Air Wing, the 36th Air Wing of Gioia del Colle is also equipped with Eurofighter Typhoons and is committed to performing immediate take-off and interception in the event of alarm. In addition, Cervia’s 5th Air Wing (near Ravenna on the eastern coast) and Trapani’s 37th Air Wing in Siciliy accomplish these duties.

Eurofighter Typhoon deliveries completed to the Austrian Air Force
Eurofighter has delivered the 15th and final aircraft ordered by the Austrian Armed Forces today. The aircraft was rolled out from the the EADS Defence & Security Manching assembly line, close to Munich, Germany.
The contract for the supply of 15 Eurofighter aircraft, including weapons and equipment, was signed by Austria and Eurofighter GmbH in July 2003. The contracts also covered simulation equipments, personnel training and logistic support.
This logistic support system helped the Austrian Air Force to commence operational air policing missions – the prime task the aircraft were ordered for – just 11 months after delivery of the first Eurofighter on 12 July 2007. Since the first Typhoon entered service, the aircraft have flown more than 1,100 flying hours with the Air Surveillance Wing’s home base in Zeltweg.
With the completion of the deliveries to Austria, five air forces in Europe have the Typhoon in service as the backbone of their fleets to enable interoperability; development of standard operational procedures and mutual logistic support to increase the already high average of fleet efficiency and effectiveness.
Enzo Casolini, Eurofighter CEO, said: “The delivery of the last Eurofighter Typhoon to Austria provides to Austrian Armed Forces the best aerial defence capabilities available in the World, both in operational, cost and fleet effectiveness terms. With this aircraft we are close to the 200th Typhoon being delivered, a target that we hope to reach by the end of this year”.
Bernhard Gerwert, Chairman of the Eurofighter Supervisory Board and CEO of Military Air Systems within EADS Defence & Security, underlined the significance of this achievement: “Following delivery of this Eurofighter today, Austria now has at its disposal the contractually agreed number of high-performance interceptors required to secure its airspace. With the Eurofighter, Austria has fielded a fighter aircraft that will represent the best solution for Austrian air surveillance for many years to come thanks to its outstanding flight performance, sensor capabilities, and its ability to be integrated into data networks.”

9 billion euro contract for 112 Eurofighter Typhoons signed – Press Release

9 billion euro contract for 112 Eurofighter Typhoons signed
NETMA (NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency), Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH and EUROJET Turbo GmbH signed today the production contract for a further 112 aircraft, including 241 engines, for the four partner Nations: Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.
The Tranche 3.9 billion contract confirms Eurofighter Typhoon as the best selling defence aircraft on the market with 559 units under production contract, including 15 for Austria and 72 for Saudi Arabia.
Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH CEO Enzo Casolini commented: “This is a major achievement in the Eurofighter programme and serves to reaffirm the importance and the independence of the defence sector of the European industry. The agreement, achieved in conjunction with NETMA and the four Nations involved in the programme, will provide the Air Forces with the best asset available to address their requirements for both air-to-air and air-to-ground roles”.
EUROJET Managing Director Hartmut J. Tenter commented: “This is an outstanding success for the EUROJET programme and a clear signal to the international community endorsing the quality of the product. The EJ200 stands for leading-edge technology, including advanced integrated Health Monitoring to deliver class-leading reliability, maintainability and Through Life Cost—the benchmark of excellence”.
NETMA’s General Manager, Lt.Gen. Antonino Altorio remarked that “the capabilities of Tranche 3 aircraft consolidate the already excellent performances of Tranche 1 and 2 aircraft and will enable the Air Forces to carry out primary air defence in NATO missions as well as maintaining air superiority in theatres of operations and, if necessary, providing support in the air-to-ground role. This contract sets the baseline for consequent contracts for logistic support which is fundamental to keeping fleets available while reducing, significantly, the cost of in-service support”.
Today the Eurofighter programme not only represents the largest European industrial programme, supporting 100,000 jobs in 400 companies across Europe, but it is also the most advanced example of technology within the European industry base. It sets the standard in terms of best value for a new generation defence aircraft programme.
With the production of Eurofighter Typhoon, now being confirmed until well into the next decade, the future of the programme is assured and will maintain and develop the current technological capability in Europe, enhancing future export opportunities and giving the four partner Nations a significant return on their investments. Having already secured two export contracts with Austria in 2003 and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2007, Eurofighter Typhoon will continue to follow up all export opportunities.

Eurofighter and Eurojet Turbo consortia and their partner Companies are actively pursuing campaigns in Switzerland, India, Japan, Romania, Greece, Turkey and exploring possible opportunities in South Korea, Bulgaria, Croatia and other Nations.

Eurofighter Typhoon is the world’s most advanced new generation real multi-role/swing-role combat aircraft available on the market and has been ordered by six nations (Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Austria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). With 559 aircraft under
production contract, it is Europe’s largest military collaborative programme and delivers leadingedge technology, strengthening Europe’s aerospace industry in the global competitive market.
More than 100,000 jobs in 400 companies are secured by the programme. Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH manages the programme on behalf of the Eurofighter Partner Companies: Alenia Finmeccanica, BAE Systems, EADS CASA and EADS Deutschland, Europe’s foremost aerospace companies with a total turnover of approx. 88 billion Euros (2008).
The EUROJET consortium is responsible for the management of development, support and export of the new generation EJ200 engine system, installed in the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. EUROJET’s shareholders comprise Avio (Italy), ITP (Spain), MTU Aero Engines (Germany) and Rolls-Royce (UK). The EJ200 engine, with its unprecedented performance record combined with multi-role capability and highest availability at low life-cycle costs, is perfectly set to meet the air forces’ demands of today and the future.
NETMA was formed on 1 January 1996 by the merger of two previously separate NATO agencies which had been established to manage Tornado and Eurofighter (EF2000) programmes.
The Agency is responsible to the partner Nations (Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) for all the aspects of the programme covering development, procurement and inservice support of Eurofighter and Tornado aircraft weapon systems. NETMA provides partner Nations with an efficient, effective and coherent management service for these two major international programmes.

Successful first operational NATO assessment of a Eurofighter Wing
Excellent results were achieved after the first operational evaluation made by NATO of a Eurofighter Typhoon Wing. A NATO evaluation team certified the Italian Air Force’s 4th Fighter Wing at the Grosseto Base as a NATO Quick Response Force.
This means that the 4th Wing becomes the first Eurofighter flight unit to obtain this important NATO certification.
The operational evaluation took place during the “Operation Discrete Jury” exercise, which tested the ability of the 4th Wing to be deployed abroad for peace-keeping and peace-making missions.
The exercise involved many air wings’ activities, from rescue to telecommunication services, self-defence and survival capabilities and, more particularly, logistic support, maintenance and flight operations. It was in this very field that the operations of the Grosseto Base’s Typhoons were positively evaluated, having demonstrated excellent operational availability and compliance with national and NATO’s operational requirement.
Enzo Casolini, Eurofighter CEO, said: “We are very pleased that the first Wing of Eurofighter Typhoon has achieved such an important goal. This clearly demonstrates the maturity of the Eurofighter programme as well as highlighting the capabilities of the aircraft and its operational availability which reached a very high level”.
The 4th Fighter Wing, together with the 5th Wing of Cervia, the 36th of Gioia del Colle and the 37th of Trapani, is one of the Italian Air Force units assigned to the control of Italian airspace 24 hours a day all year round.
Within the 4th Fighter Wing, the 20 Squadron is also active with its twin-seat Typhoons which are tasked with the “transition” of Italian pilots assigned to the Eurofighter Squadrons.
England Vacillating On Next Batch Of Eurofighters

Back in May we had written that England would go ahead with the full buy of the next order of Eurofighter Typhoon modern fighter aircraft. This was based on the fact that the costs associated with canceling the contract would be prohibitive. There was also some hope that part of the aircraft could be used to fulfill foriegn military sales rather then seeing service with the Royal Air Force.
Now it is reported that the deal may fall through after all. England like America is faced with economic problems that have led to massive borrowing and an attempt to spend their way out off the recession. This means that funds are limited and the cost of the new aircraft fairly prohibitive. Not only will there be the cost of breaking the contract but several thousand jobs related to building the aircraft may be lost. The government is trying to renegotiate the price or the fees in order to save some money but time is running out. Germany has restated their support for the program and an intent to go ahead and buy the latest batch.
When the original contract was signed England did not imagine that they would not have enough money. It was they who insisted on the strict and high fees if the contract was not followed through on in an attempt to keep the other countries involved from leaving. This had happened several times in the past when NATO and the U.S. joined on various development and procurement programs.
UK Budget Woes Affecting Eurofighter

The Eurofighter program is coming up for the next production buy. England, Germany, Italy and Spain are all planning to buy new aircraft with this batch. The original plan was to buy just over one hundred aircraft for about $180 billion. England was expected to buy sixteen. Now England’s budget problems is leading the Brown government to consider not participating in this purchase.
This decision is being fought by the other nations as a reduction in the quantity will increase the price for all of the them. England wants to negotiate a cheaper price for the aircraft. It doesn’t help that a great deal of high quality manufacturing jobs are based on this program across Europe. Few countries can face more unemployment in the current world economic situation.
The Eurofighter TYphoon is facing much of the same opposition that the F-22 is with some saying it is not the type of aircraft needed for today’s war on terror. The fact that it is the most expensive aircraft in Europe also is not helping. The European aviation industry is struggling right now with the A400M program and a possible cancellation of that. For England to back out of its Eurofighter commitment would only add to the problems.
India Rejects Rafale For New Fighter

Update — Flight International is reporting that India says it has not ruled out any competitor in the program.
The Indian Air Force is looking to purchase an advanced fighter to add to their inventory. Six foreign companies had submitted bids for the 126 aircraft order. Now word comes that the French proposed Dassault Rafale was eliminated from the competition. The Indianexpress.com reports that publicly it was stated the aircraft did not meet certain “qualitative” requirements. It was also said that the proposal submitted showed the aircraft did not meet some of the technical requirements for the program. This means that the contest will continue with Boeing, Lockheed Martin, SAAB, MiG and Eurofighter participation for now.
The deal is one of several that India is proceeding with in an attempt to upgrade the technical capability of their armed forces. In the past the country had tended to buy from Russia or England. India has also spent the last several years developing an indigenous arms industry. Although lately they have turned to outside sources to include Israel and the U.S. for advanced weapons.
Currently there are several nations looking at buying advanced fighters. The Rafale has not been bid for many as most of the competition has been between the F/A-18G, SAAB Gripen, F-35 JSF and the Eurofighter Typhoon. The Indian contract is certainly one of the largest percolating.

Six companies submitted bids for India’s new fighter acquisition. See a story here. As expected both Boeing and Lockheed submitted bids as well as MiG, SAAB, Aerospatiale and the Eurofighter Typhoon. This goal is to narrow the competition to two or three of the proposals and then choose a winner with first aircraft due in 2011. This means that SAAB has bid on this and the Norwegian buy in less then a week.
