NAVISTAR DEFENSE HIGHLIGHTS THREE TACTICAL VEHICLES AT AUSA ANNUAL MEETING — Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 22, 2012) Navistar Defense, LLC showcases three tactical vehicles this week at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting. The Special Operations Tactical Vehicle for the Ground Mobility Vehicle (GMV) 1.1 competition, the Indigen Armor Non-Standard Tactical Truck (NSTT) and the International® MaxxPro® Recovery Vehicle – Performance Kit (MRV-PK) demonstrate the latest in vehicle technology.

The Special Operations Tactical Vehicle and the NSTT are both designed to incorporate scalable armor packages to meet multiple threat levels encountered by special operators. The two vehicles share more than 60 percent vehicle commonality and are engineered to carry large payloads at off-road racing speeds in the roughest of mission terrain. Each vehicle can be integrated with a full government furnished Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) suite.

“The Special Operations Tactical Vehicle and the NSTT share similar vehicle capabilities to meet the rigors and unique requirements of special operators,” said Archie Massicotte, president, Navistar Defense. “We worked closely with Indigen Armor on the design of our Special Operations Tactical Vehicle and it is a solid vehicle entry for the Special Operations Command GMV 1.1 competition.”

The vehicle capabilities of the MRV-PK provide noticeably improved vehicle performance including an increase in horsepower and enhanced towing capability to support missions in Afghanistan. The kit can be retrofitted onto existing MaxxPro Recovery Vehicles and improves engine power by 20 percent to increase grade ability and acceleration. Mobility is improved through the addition of Navistar’s DXM™ front independent suspension along with an upgraded rear-wheel suspension. An auxiliary fuel tank increases range while a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) and six channel anti-lock braking system improves traction and performance in soft soil terrain.

“We saw a need in theater for additional capabilities and we have designed a retrofit solution ready today for our recovery vehicles currently in service,” said Massicotte “Our current MaxxPro vehicles have been tasked with recovery missions requiring unprecedented mobility and towing capabilities and our performance kit is a cost-conscious solution that anticipates future mission needs. This offering also comes on the heels of our recent MaxxPro survivability upgrade, which we can also make available for the MaxxPro Recovery Vehicle.”

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov., 15, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Raytheon Company’s (NYSE: RTN) BBN Technologies’ Boomerang Warrior-X wearable shooter-detection system has been selected by the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence (MOD) for field trials related to urgent operational requirements.

The selection follows an assessment by the MOD’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory that included Boomerang Warrior-X and several other wearable shooter-detection systems. The study found that Boomerang Warrior-X was the most effective system tested. Now Boomerang Warrior-X will be assessed in theater conditions.

“Individual dismounted soldiers are the most vulnerable,” said Mark Sherman, general manager, Boomerang, Raytheon BBN Technologies. “Sending Boomerang Warrior-X to the field will provide U.K. troops with the very best protection available.”

Boomerang Warrior-X is a compact shooter-detection system that is easily integrated into the tactical vests of dismounted troops. Weighing less than 11 ounces, the system delivers an alert through an earpiece and provides details of the shooter location on a matchbox-sized display. It incorporates the technology used in the vehicle-mounted Boomerang III system. More than 5,000 Boomerang III systems have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Raytheon Tests New Weapon Designed for Unmanned Aircraft Systems — Press Release

Raytheon Tests New Weapon Designed for Unmanned Aircraft Systems

YUMA PROVING GROUND, Ariz., Oct. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) successfully flight tested Small Tactical Munition, a new weapon specifically designed to be employed from unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). STM is a 13-pound guided bomb that is approximately 2-feet long, making it the smallest bomb in the Raytheon family of weapons.

The bomb’s dual-mode, semiactive laser seeker and GPS-inertial navigation system enable the weapon to engage both fixed and moving targets around-the-clock, regardless of weather conditions.

“Current combat operations have highlighted the need for extremely small, precise weapons that are optimally designed for remotely piloted aircraft,” said Bob Francois, Raytheon vice president of Advanced Missiles and Unmanned Systems. “STM is part of a portfolio of weapons that meets the warfighter’s need in this area.”

Raytheon flight tested two STM weapons on two separate passes from a Cobra™ UAS. The GPS-INS guided the weapons to a mid-course position where the semiactive laser seeker precisely guided the weapon to the target, achieving all test objectives.

“Raytheon has been the world leader in weapons and aircraft weaponization for 60 years; developing a unique weapon for today’s unmanned aircraft combat operations is a natural fit,” added Francois.

JTRS GMR Completes System Integration Testing — Press Release

JTRS GMR Completes System Integration Testing

FORT HUACHUCA, ARIZ., Sept. 28, 2010 – The Joint Program Executive Office for the Joint Tactical Radio System (JPEO JTRS) announced today that the System Integration Test (SIT) of the Joint Tactical Radio System Ground Mobile Radios (JTRS GMR) conducted for the U.S. Army was completed on September 14. The two-month test deployed 35 Engineering Development Model (EDM) GMR radios across the rugged terrain of the Electronic Proving Ground Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) Test Bed at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. to analyze the radios and the software waveforms ability to provide new communications capabilities to Soldiers and Marines.

“SIT is the first formal government-run test of the radio system,” said COL Gregory Fields, program manager, JTRS GMR. “Although we’re evaluating the results and the full report will not be released until later this year, the Ground Mobile Radios provided new capabilities that are needed by our Soldiers. The testing displayed improved performance in the ability to transfer data through the network over a 900 square mile range, utilizing the new Wideband Networking Waveform (WNW) and Solider Radio Waveform (SRW) as well as current force waveforms (SINCGARS, SATCOM, EPLRS and HF) in the field.”

The SIT, one of several tests conducted this summer, verifies all of the systems within the JTRS GMR adaptive, multi-channel communications system. Soldiers, Marines and Government contract employees ran the radio system through a series of scenarios, testing the system’s ability to transfer voice, data and video communications in remote areas where there is no communications infrastructure.

“JTRS GMR will provide soldiers with new capabilities to talk, text, share position location information or the latest video and still imagery quickly, something that’s not available on the battlefield today,” Fields added. “This continuous communication exchange will change how joint forces are able to engage the enemy.”

###

About JPEO JTRS

Since its inception in early 1997, the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) has evolved from a loosely associated group of radio replacement programs to an integrated effort to network multiple weapon system platforms and forward combat units where it matters most – at the last tactical mile. In 2005, JTRS was restructured under the leadership of a Joint Program Executive Officer headquartered in San Diego, California. JTRS is harnessing the power of the Global Information Grid (GIG) to help the Warfighter achieve overall battlefield superiority.

By developing and implementing an open architecture of cutting-edge radio waveform technology, multiple radio types (e.g., handheld, ground-mobile, airborne, maritime) are now capable of communicating with one another. The ultimate goal is to produce a family of interoperable, modular, software-defined radios that operate as nodes in a network that provides secure wireless communication and networking services for mobile and fixed forces, consisting of U.S. Allies, joint and coalition partners, and in time, disaster response personnel.

General Dynamics Canada to Supply Smart Displays for U.S. Army MRAP Vehicles — Press Release

General Dynamics Canada to Supply Smart Displays for U.S. Army MRAP Vehicles

OTTAWA, Ontario, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — General Dynamics Canada received an order to supply more than 1,000 Smart Display Units (SDU) for installation in U.S. Army Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. The order represents the first use of General Dynamics Canada’s technology on the MRAP platform, expanding the reach of the company’s comprehensive suite of vehicle electronics currently embedded in the majority of the U.S. armoured vehicle fleet.

The MRAP vehicles’ command, control, communications and computer, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) capabilities are being upgraded to support future growth and improve operational capability for the crews. General Dynamics Canada will provide the SD7310, its latest-generation smart display designed specifically for on-the-move operation in armoured fighting and tactical vehicles. The SD7310 integrates a 10.4″ ruggedized computer and high-resolution touch-screen display into a single device, eliminating the need for a separate and dedicated computer processing unit. It is ideally suited to address the critical size, weight and power, and cost (SWAP-C) requirements of space-constrained vehicle platforms.

“The migration to next generation smart displays on combat vehicles provides warfighters with increased operational capability and improves their ability to communicate on the battlefield,” said David Ibbetson, general manager of General Dynamics Canada. “Establishing this footprint on MRAP is strategically important to General Dynamics Canada and the future of our vehicle electronics business.”

There are more than 16,000 MRAP vehicles in service with the U.S. Army. The current order reflects requirements of a first phase program in which 500 MRAP vehicles will be upgraded and each will be equipped with two SD7310 displays.

General Dynamics Canada received the order from WestWind Technologies Inc., which was recently awarded an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract by the U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command (TACOM LCMC) to supply the C4ISR digital backbone B-Kits. TACOM is the acquisition and support center for all of the Army’s ground vehicles.
