Pope Air Force Base of Air Mobility Command Deploys AtHoc’s Network-Centric Emergency Mass Notification System

Pope’s System Is Hosted in Air Force Reserve Command Data Center, Marking First Cross Major Command Hosting Implementation for Mass Notification within U.S. Air Force
San Mateo, CA (May 5, 2010) AtHoc, Inc., the pioneer and leader in network-centric emergency mass notification systems, announced that Air Mobility Command’s (AMC) Pope Air Force Base (AFB) deployed the AtHoc IWSAlerts™ mass emergency alerting system to warn thousands of base personnel in the event of an emergency.

Pope AFB’s mass notification system is co-hosted by the U.S. Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) through its centralized AFRC-based servers. This deployment approach was driven by the fact that Pope AFB includes both AMC and AFRC Wings. Such deployment delivered significant benefits:

The ability of operators in Pope’s consolidated Command Post to activate alerts to both Pope’s AMC and AFRC personnel using same system, training and procedures or Concept of Operation (CONOPS)

100% interoperability between the AMC/Pope AFB and AFRC alerting systems

Speedy deployment time, achieving full operational status within a few days from contract award

Reduced total cost through shared servers and communications infrastructure as well as reduced IT management overhead

This implementation marks the first cross major command hosting via a “private cloud” model implemented within the U.S. Air Force for net-centric mass notification solution, setting the stage for additional cross major command implementations.

As part of AMC, Pope AFB will use its system to warn active duty personnel in times of emergency and to give clear instructions for action and response. AtHoc IWSAlerts will deliver popup notifications to all networked computers at the installation as well as send alerts to cell phones, landline phones and personal communications devices. Additionally, the alerting system integrates Pope AFB’s existing Giant Voice/PA system through a single, unified Web console.

“The Reserve Wing at Pope has used AtHoc for several years. By installing and deploying AtHoc’s alerting system quickly in conjunction with AFRC, not only is Pope AFB enjoying cost savings but also enjoys operational benefits and standardization of training and CONOPS,” said Andy Anderson, Vice President of Operations, Defense Sector for AtHoc. “The hosted AtHoc IWSAlerts model enables Pope AFB to achieve its operational objectives in the most cost efficient way by leveraging state-of-the-art technology and net-centric enterprise-level architecture.”

Lockheed Martin C-5M Super Galaxy Is ‘Effective, Suitable and Mission Capable’ for USAF Operations

MARIETTA, Ga., March 9 /PRNewswire/ — The Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation (OT&E) Center has rated the C-5M as “effective, suitable and mission capable” based on results from OT&E testing completed in January 2010.

The OT&E phase spanned four months, evaluating various performance aspects to validate the capability and reliability of the C-5M. These positive test results enable the Super Galaxy to continue to support critical missions flown in support of world-wide operational contingencies.

“The C-5M test was a resounding success because of teamwork between the test team, the user, the contractor and the program office,” said Col. John Scorsone, Director of Test and Evaluation for Air Mobility Command. “The integrated test team will now transition to an integrated fielding team which will build on past relationships to help this program achieve even more record-breaking results.”

In addition to setting 42 world records last year, the C-5Ms delivered needed cargo to the warfighter during OT&E and continue to perform combat support missions today. Performance during OT&E proved the modernized A and B models of the C-5 are redefining strategic airlift for the military and will be a force multiplier for decades to come.

Payload and range improvements in the C-5M enable a fully loaded aircraft to fly unrefueled for more than 5,000 miles and bypass traditional en route stops. This not only saves thousands of gallons of fuel, but decreases the amount of time needed to get precious cargo to the warfighter’s destination.

“The C-5M is a game-changer and we are excited about the world record-breaking capabilities it provides those protecting freedom across the globe,” said Lorraine Martin, Lockheed Martin C-5 program vice president. “We greatly appreciate the dedication and exceptional work of the Air Force active and reserve crews flying and maintaining the C-5M during OT&E.”

Current USAF plans call for 52 fully-modernized C-5Ms by 2016 with the next delivery scheduled for September 2010 to Dover Air Force Base, Del.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation reported 2009 sales of $45.2 billion.

A key part of building a good proposal and running a smart acquisition campaign is to always remember the customer. That's not very tough on KC-X. We see the U.S. Air Force working very hard to fly and maintain their current fleet of KC-135 air refueling tankers each day and realize they must have a new tanker as soon as possible.

I just read a posting in Air Force Magazine's Daily Report eNewsletter ("Afghan Surge Prompts Mobility Records") describing the service's record breaking efforts in Afghanistan that tells it all. According to the story, USAF mobility forces have set records for cargo airdropped (4.1 million pounds in September). On the tanker side, approximately 80 million pounds of fuel was offloaded last month compared to 60 million pounds way back in February.

For those of you who have served in the Air Mobility Command, this type of surge is not new but still very impressive. Whether it's the planners at the Tanker Airlift Control Center managing the global movement of aircraft or the aircrews and maintainers keeping it all on schedule despite some difficult challenges, it is very clear how important the U.S. Air Force is to keeping America safe and projecting our nation's reach.
