Oshkosh Defense Showcases New Variants of MRAP All-Terrain Vehicles at Eurosatory 2014 — Press Release

(June 16, 2014) — Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK), will unveil its new MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) variants to military leaders and dignitaries from around the world at Eurosatory 2014 in Paris, starting today through June 20. Oshkosh has expanded its combat-proven M-ATV Family of Vehicles to serve a spectrum of mission requirements and needs for armed forces around the world.

The Oshkosh L-ATV platform was selected for the U.S. Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) program’s current Engineering, Manufacturing and Development (EMD) phase and is undergoing rigorous U.S. Government testing. The JLTV program will fill the current tactical wheeled-vehicle capability gap between larger MRAP vehicles and the aging High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) fleet.

The Oshkosh L-ATV uses the company’s proprietary TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension system to deliver 25 percent improved wheel travel. Based on extensive testing that represents 85 percent of the Earth’s terrain, the L-ATV is proven to perform at speeds 70 percent faster than traditional MRAP vehicles in off-road environments.

The tunable band pass filters and band reject filters, also known as band-stop filters or band-rejection filters, are effective in band selection or frequency discrimination with high attenuation greater than 50 dB possible, allowing for excellent noise, harmonic and adjacent-band reduction. Alion Awarded $2.8M DTRA Contract to Develop Improvements to Nuclear Detection Technology — Press Release

Technology Solutions Firm to Conduct R&D and Engineering on Next-Generation Methods to Pinpoint Explosive Substances

McLean, VA — May 29, 2014 — To counter the continuing threat of nuclear-fueled explosives, such as dirty bombs, sophisticated detection methods are required. Historically, the Department of Defense and other agencies used Helium-3 (He-3) to detect neutrons emanating from Special Nuclear Material (SNM). The supply of He-3, an extremely rare non-naturally occurring substance, is rapidly drying up. To address the critical need for a means to detect neutrons that does not rely on He-3, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) awarded a $2.8 million contract to Alion Science and Technology to develop enhancements to a replacement technology.

Alion, a global engineering, R&D, IT and operational solutions company, will support DTRA by developing new methods to use an advanced detection system that uses boron-coated “straws” – literally bundles of thin copper tubes with a coating of boron, an abundant element.

Current He-3 detectors are omnidirectional, so they can only alert users to the presence of neutrons. Under the contract, Alion will develop methods to make the boron-coated straw detector directional, so that a search team can pinpoint the location of the source of neutrons and thus react to threats more effectively.

Alion engineers also will research how to increase the detector’s efficiency by exploring new straw geometries and will focus on miniaturizing and speeding up the electronics. Additionally, Alion will review various manufacturing technologies to reduce the technology’s overall production costs.

“By researching the means to make the boron-coated straw detector more precise and more reasonable to produce, Alion can help DTRA employ improved technologies to mitigate threats effectively and keep warfighters and citizens safe,” said Terri Spoonhour, Alion Senior Vice President and Distributed Simulation Group Manager. “But, beyond providing a drop-in replacement for He-3 detector components, this engineering effort opens up a number of possibilities for new or enhanced portable systems that can be carried into questionable areas or permanently installed to protect ports and depots.”

Alion’s teaming partner is Proportional Technologies Inc. of Houston. The period of performance runs until March 1, 2017.

Brandin-Lain joins from the Royal Air Force (RAF), where he was a Squadron Leader for the Intelligence Branch. Congressman Garamendi Supports Travis and Beale Air Force Bases in Defense Bill Debate — Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Early this morning, the House Armed Services Committee completed consideration of the Fiscal Year 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA-03) voted in favor of the bill. The legislation was voted out of Committee 61-0 and awaits a vote on the House Floor in the next few weeks.

“This legislation is very important for the military communities in my district. I am glad we were able to develop a bipartisan bill to provide for a smart and strong defense,” said Congressman Garamendi. “While every bill can be improved, this legislation is a good step forward.”

Supporting Travis and Beale Air Force Bases

Throughout the process, Congressman Garamendi has supported the vital missions at Travis and Beale Air Force bases, which are both located in the 3rd Congressional District. Travis is located in Fairfield and carries out an Air Mobility mission. Beale, located near Marysville, carries out an Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission.

“The work of Travis and Beale Airmen is crucial for America’s 21st Century national defense. The ability to rapidly collect intelligence and deploy defense assets is key to advancing our national interests: winning on the battlefield, preventing conflicts, and responding to humanitarian disasters,” Congressman Garamendi said. “In promoting the interests of the bases, my office has an excellent partner in the Solano and Yuba/Sutter communities. I am grateful for their support.”

Faced with Congress’s constraining austerity budgets, the President’s Budget proposed phasing out the KC-10 tanker and the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft, which are based at Travis and Beale respectively. Congressman Garamendi inserted NDAA language that would prevent the premature retirement of these aircraft (click here for text of this language and click here for text of the entire NDAA). This language was included in the “Chairman’s Mark” of the NDAA and the amended version voted out of Committee.

“I am proud to support language in the NDAA that would prevent a dangerous capability gap in our Air Mobility and ISR missions,” said Garamendi. “We can’t put the cart before the horse by retiring the KC-10 before the KC-46 is ready to meet our Air Mobility needs. Similarly, the top commander for American troops in South Korea, Army General Curtis Scaparrotti, recently testified before Congress and said that the U-2 is essential for knowing what the North Korean regime is doing – just one example of how the information the U-2 provides strengthens our national defense and saves lives.”

Congressmen Garamendi and Jon Runyan (R-NJ-03), who are co-chairs of the Air Mobility Caucus, introduced bipartisan legislation that would prevent gaps in the Air Mobility mission with the transition from KC-10 to KC-46 tankers.

Garamendi also added language to emphasize the critical and complementary capabilities that High Altitude ISR assets such as the Global Hawk Block 30 and the U-2 provide to combatant commanders. These highly specialized platforms and the Airmen at Beale who support the overall ISR capability play a vital role in executing U.S. defense strategy. Increasing Oversight of Pentagon Spending

Congressman Garamendi offered several proposals to look for ways to eliminate wasteful Pentagon spending on projects that do not advance America’s national security. The Committee failed to accept his commonsense proposals to evaluate the nuclear triad, B-61 gravity bomb in Europe, and the far over budget MOX facility in South Carolina. However, the Committee did adopt Garamendi’s amendments to direct the Department of Defense to provide the defense committees with briefings on the justification for both the Long-Range Standoff Weapon (LRSO) and the requirement to reach a 50-80 new plutonium pits per year. Additionally, the Committee incorporated his proposals to direct increased oversight and accountability of money spent on the war in Afghanistan.

“There is agreement across the political spectrum that there is waste in the Pentagon budget that comes at the expense of critical defense missions, job creating investments in education and infrastructure, and responsible deficit reduction. My proposals aim to address the most glaring examples of waste: outdated Cold War era nuclear weapon systems and massive corruption in Afghanistan. I am glad that we reached common ground on some of these proposals,” said Garamendi.

Highlights of the NDAA

The NDAA would:

· Increase troop pay by 1.8%;

· Reject proposals to reduce military commissary benefits (Garamendi is a cosponsor of the Save Our Military Shopping Benefits Act, which also prevents reductions in this earned benefit);

· Combat sexual assault in the military through a variety of bipartisan proposals. The bill would eliminate the “good soldier defense” – a consideration of general military character toward the probability of innocence in sexual assault prosecutions. It would also call for a review of the terms of discharge for those who are victims of sexual offenses, to ensure that they have not been persecuted for reporting crimes. Victims would also be consulted as to their preference for prosecuting offenders by court-martial or through civilian courts; and

· Increase funding for behavioral and psychological health programs to address the scourge of suicides within the military.

U.S. Office of Naval Research Continues Cargo UGV Project with Oshkosh Defense — Press Release

Counter-IED solutions apply industry-leading unmanned ground vehicle technology

OSHKOSH, Wis. (May 7, 2014) — The U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) will continue the ground-breaking Cargo UGV project and has awarded a contract to Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK), using Oshkosh TerraMax® unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) technology. The ONR is advancing the project originated by the U.S. Marine Corps Warfighting Lab.

The Cargo UGV project was initiated in 2010 to identify how UGV technology could be integrated into the Marine Corps’ tactical wheeled vehicle (TWV) fleet to reduce Marines’ exposure to threats and to streamline logistics convoy operations. Under the MCWL Cargo UGV effort, two Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacements (MTVRs) were upgraded with TerraMax systems that enabled fully unmanned operation. Government evaluations revealed that the state-of-the-art autonomous capability offered practical utility in a variety of operational situations. Live force experiments in which combat-veteran Marines were trained to operate the UGVs in concert with manned vehicles furthered the development of concepts of operation for robotic systems in combat environments.

Oshkosh will be attending the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) Unmanned Systems 2014, May 13-15 in Orlando, Fla., to demonstrate the benefits of TerraMax UGV technology and discuss the Cargo UGV project.

“The Cargo UGV project has pushed unmanned technology into the TWV realm like no other effort, and the results have proven how mature and ready TerraMax UGV technology is for use in the field,” said Chris Yakes, vice president of Advanced Products Engineering at Oshkosh Corporation. “We are eager to continue work with the ONR to further demonstrate the readiness level of UGVs and the interoperability of TerraMax technology with other mission systems.”

Under a contract through the Robotics Technology Consortium (RTC), Oshkosh and the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) will work with the ONR and the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) to integrate ONR-specified counter-improvised explosive device (C-IED) technologies onto the Cargo UGV MTVRs to demonstrate force protection advantages of semi-autonomous tactical wheeled vehicles for C-IED missions.

The TerraMax UGV system will be enhanced to intelligently incorporate C-IED payloads, such as ground-penetrating radar and mine roller systems, and the TerraMax OCU will provide over-the-horizon situational awareness to accompanying manned vehicles. The system is highly interoperable, using a widely adopted, non-proprietary open architecture messaging standard that enables modularity and easy integration of new subsystems.

The Cargo UGV project is being conducted as part of the ONR’s SIAFU program to demonstrate an integrated “system of systems” that provides on-the-move, autonomous and multi-platform explosive hazard defeat (EHD) capabilities. The current phase of work will culminate in a technology concept demonstration in 2015.

TerraMax UGV Technology

Oshkosh TerraMax UGV technology is designed as a modular appliqué kit that can be tightly integrated into modern production vehicles or retrofitted onto legacy platforms. Vehicles equipped with the TerraMax UGV technology can seamlessly collaborate with manned vehicles to carry out missions at full operational tempo. TerraMax UGVs function autonomously across varying terrains and in all weather conditions, day or night – and original vehicle payload and performance are retained.

Developed to support rapid deployment, troops can be trained to oversee TerraMax-equipped vehicles in only a few days to take advantage of an unsurpassed standoff and advance situational awareness capability. The user-friendly operator interface meets the unique demands of troops in the field, enabling warfighters to focus on mission success without undue distraction, and empowering a single operator to supervise multiple autonomous vehicles. Oshkosh is teamed with the NREC of Carnegie Mellon University for perception system and autonomy software development.

Oshkosh also is transitioning technologies from the TerraMax UGV system to provide active-safety features for the manned operation of vehicle fleets, including electronic stability control, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control and electric power-assist steering.

Oshkosh Defense Introduces New M-ATV Variants at SOFEX 2014 — Press Release

Expanded M-ATV family of vehicles delivers extreme off-road mobility and protection for a wider range of missions

OSHKOSH, Wis. (May 5, 2014) — Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK), is introducing new Mine-Resistant, Ambush Protected (MRAP) All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) variants at the Special Operations Forces Exhibition & Conference (SOFEX), taking place May 5-8 in Amman, Jordan. Oshkosh is evolving the combat-proven M-ATV family of vehicles to meet a more diverse range of mission requirements and needs for armed forces in the Middle East, North Africa region, and around the world.

The expanded global M-ATV family of vehicles includes two multi-mission models – the M-ATV Standard and M-ATV Extended, each with multiple variants. The M-ATV Standard is designed to provide response and support capabilities for a range of offensive and defensive missions in off-road environments. L-ATV on Display

Oshkosh designed the L-ATV to meet a global need for a new level of protected mobility for a light vehicle and to replace decades-old light vehicle fleets that lack protection capabilities against today’s most significant threats, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).

The Oshkosh L-ATV uses the TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension system to enable 25 percent improved wheel travel and 70 percent improved speeds in off-road terrain compared to today’s best-performing MRAP vehicles in off-road environments.

The Oshkosh L-ATV was selected for the U.S. Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) program’s current phase and is undergoing rigorous U.S. Government testing. Lockheed Martin testing facility paves the way for more radio connections to MUOS COMMUNICATIONS satellites — Press Releasee

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 30, 2014 – The number of end users connecting to the U.S. Navy’s Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) will grow as radio terminal providers begin using a testing facility that simulates the satellite network. A team from Harris recently used the lab to connect the AN/PRC-117G Falcon III radio to MUOS systems developed by Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT]. It’s one of several terminals that are well under way in testing their connections with the constellation.

Many terminals—from hand-held radios to satellite links on ships, planes and ground vehicles—can easily integrate this new type of signal, and Lockheed Martin’s facility helps developers test those connections. While some terminals are new products, the lab also helps existing terminals connect. Enabling access for radios in inventory means more users can use MUOS without the cost of all new gear.

“MUOS provides a leap in capability that can save lives and improve missions, so naturally we want as many users to connect as possible,” said Dave Helseth, Lockheed Martin director of Systems Engineering, Integration and Test for MUOS. “Over 55,000 currently fielded terminals could be upgraded for full MUOS capability as early as 2016. Our simulation lab helps providers quickly complete their integration work and move forward with government certification.”

According to Harris, the Department of Defense uses more than 30,000 AN/PRC-117G terminals. With a MUOS update, all could be ready for MUOS connections pending government certification. Additionally, the General Dynamics AN/PRC-155 manpack radio is the terminal program of record and offers more connections.

MUOS delivers secure, priority-based voice and high-speed data to mobile users using an advanced waveform similar to commercial cell phone technology. The radio testing facility incorporates a full ground station, satellite payload, radio instrumentation and simulators that emulate radio links in challenging conditions, such as rain, forest canopy and urban canyons.

User testing begins on Third AEHF satellite as ultra-secure communications payload activated for first time — Press Release

Flawless Journey to Orbit Used Industry’s Most Powerful Electric Propulsion System

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 26, 2014The third Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) satellite has begun transmitting using its protected communications payload, joining two other satellites undergoing system test in orbit with a suite of user terminals. AEHF satellites are produced by Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] for the U.S. Air Force.

Launched on Sept. 18, 2013, AEHF-3 arrived in its final orbit position and began transmissions in January. The first two satellites have been doing well in limited user testing, and other nations are now using the system. Canada and the Netherlands connected in 2013, and an announcement of a first connection by the United Kingdom is expected this year. Now the third satellite will increase capacity and coverage as the international partners grow their user testing community.

“First transmissions on AEHF-3 were exactly what we expected, and orbit-raising was a textbook example of how to deliver a satellite to geostationary orbit,” said Mark Calassa, vice president of Protected Communication Systems at Lockheed Martin. “The satellite’s journey after launch went precisely as planned. We took advantage of the industry’s highest thrust electric propulsion, which was used during 95 percent of the transfer orbit period.”

AEHF is a hybrid spacecraft that uses both chemical and Hall Current Thruster electric propulsion to arrive at its geostationary position. Lockheed Martin has continually evolved and improved its electric propulsion for 30 years on the company’s A2100 satellite buses. Using electric propulsion helps satellites efficiently and precisely arrive on station and maintain their orbit positions.

AEHF is the most secure communications satellite system used by the U.S government. Its jam-proof communications are resilient against enemy forces, including nuclear attack, and a single satellite provides greater capacity than the entire legacy five-satellite Milstar constellation. AEHF’s five-fold increase in data rates speed up secure, survivable tactical military communications, such as real-time video, battlefield maps and targeting data, and improve links for national leaders and troops alike.

The four-nation AEHF program is led by the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base, Calif., with international partners Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Lockheed Martin is under contract to deliver the Mission Control Segment and six AEHF satellites, which are assembled at the company’s Sunnyvale, Calif., facility.

Europe’s biggest defence programme marks a 20 year anniversary today as it celebrates the first flight of the Eurofighter Typhoon on 27th March 1994.

Since that day in Manching, Germany, when Development Aircraft 1 (DA1) was flown by Test Pilot Peter Weger, over 400 Eurofighter Typhoons have been delivered with six international customers operating the aircraft and a seventh signed up.

The milestone was marked this week at Eurofighter’s main European offices close to Munich where Test Pilots from all the four nations that make up the Eurofighter programme came together to re-live the maiden flights made in Germany, the UK, Italy and Spain. They were joined by the General Manager of NETMA, Air Vice-Marshal Graham Farnell, the Chief Executive Officer of Eurofighter, Alberto Gutierrez, Board Members of both organisations and Eurofighter employees.

Alberto Gutierrez, said: “This is an historic day for the European defence industry. We have built up a fantastic legacy in this aircraft and established the foundation of today’s defence industry in Europe through unprecedented co-operation and a determined focus to build and deliver a world-class product.

“Twenty years ago, none of us could know how the world would change and few, if any of us, could have anticpated the challenges that this would bring. Now more than ever it is vital that we maintain and develop our European capabilities both in the commercial and military domains. It is in all our interests to do this.”

The Spanish-born CEO added: “The Eurofighter Typhoon that Peter Weger first flew 20 years ago is very different to the one that flies today. From the outset, the aircraft was built with capability enhancement in mind and the process of enhancement is what delivers a long-term return on investment. The Eurofighter is now the backbone of a number of air forces and will be in service for decades to come. It is a significant European asset and one which showcases to the world the very best in technology and innovation.”

NETMA’s General Manager, Graham Farnell said: “The dream of our predecessors, some 30 years ago, of a world-class European Fighter Aircraft, became a reality on 27th March 1994. This success could not have been reached without a huge amount of hard work and dedication from so many people in so many organisations across Europe.”

“The aircraft they built is now fully operational in the air forces of Germany, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom and with our partners in Austria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Soon it will also be delivered to Oman. It is defending skies and providing a 24/7 watch over Europe, the Middle East – and around the Antartic region. The challenges we face today are no less demanding than those which our predecessors had when they set out to develop this aircraft. We now need to show the same resolve, determination and vision that they had.”

While it was DA1 that first flew in Germany in 1994, it was the British who next took to the air with DA2 a few days later on 6th April. Italy followed in June 1995 and Spain in August 1996. Today, Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft are built at Final Assembly Plants in all four countries.

In total more than 225,000 flying hours have been accumulated with unprecedented levels of reliability. The aircraft has also seen active service in Libya, has been used on Baltic patrol exercises and has recently been showcased at one of the world’s leading air-to-air combat training events, Red Flag, at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.

Peter Weger, who flew that first flight said: “I had little idea when I made that maiden flight from Manching what an amazing story this would become. I knew I was piloting an incredible aircraft and we had something special. It is certainly one of those days that lives with you for the rest of your life.”

Lockheed Martin-BUILT WEATHER Satellite ENCAPSULATED For Upcoming Launch — Press Release

DMSP Satellite Will Improve Military, Civil Weather Warning

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., March 20, 2014 – A Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellite built by Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has been encapsulated into its payload fairing in preparation for an April 3 liftoff. The launch will take place aboard an Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex 3 East at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

DMSP satellites collect data that enables military forecasters to find, track and forecast weather systems all over the globe, particularly in remote and hostile areas for deployed troops. Additionally, DMSP supports a broad range of civil users with sensing capabilities not provided by U.S. civil and international weather satellite systems.

“Weather guides some of the most important decisions in the armed forces, from flight patterns to troop movements. Through DMSP, we’re helping to provide safer, successful military missions,” said Sue Stretch, DMSP program director at Lockheed Martin. “Our satellite build and test process went flawlessly. As we approach launch, we are ready to continue serving this mission for the military and civil agencies that depend on it.”

DMSP satellites fulfill the country’s most critical requirements for global atmospheric, oceanic, terrestrial and space environment information. DMSP-19 is the fourth Block 5D-3 version to be launched, and Lockheed Martin has produced more than 40 satellites throughout the program’s 50-year history. Many of the satellites are performing beyond their design life, so refreshing on-orbit capability is important for reliable weather information.

DMSP-19 is equipped with a sophisticated sensor suite that can capture visible and infrared cloud cover; measure precipitation, surface temperature and soil moisture; and collect specialized global meteorological, oceanographic and solar-geophysical information in all weather conditions.

The approaching launch is the first in five years for DMSP. The previous one was October 18, 2009, when DMSP-18 joined the constellation. The DMSP program is led by the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base, Calif., and control is provided by a joint team of the U.S. Air Force and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Suitland, Md. All DMSP satellites were integrated and tested at the Lockheed Martin Space Systems facility in Sunnyvale, Calif.

Congressmen Garamendi and Runyan Introduce Bill to Strengthen Air Mobility Mission — Press Release

Legislation would prevent gaps in Air Mobility Mission with Transition from KC-10 to KC-46 Tankers

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jon Runyan (R-NJ-03) and Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA-03) introduced H.R. 4230 bipartisan legislation that seeks to limit the retirement of the KC-10 aircraft.

Retiring the entire KC-10 fleet was not part of the Obama Administration’s FY15 defense budget proposal, yet Secretary of Defense Hagel stated that “if sequestration resumes at full force in 2016, the Air Force would have to retire its entire fleet of KC-10 tankers.”

This legislation seeks to ensure that the KC-10 tanker aircraft fleet is not retired prematurely and is available to continue to carry out its critical air refueling and cargo missions. The bill specifies that no funds can be used to retire or store the KC-10 aircraft until the new KC-46A tanker has been tested, is fully operational, and four test and 18 initial tankers have been delivered.

“Air Mobility Command is responsible for the rapid delivery of military assets around the world – something that will continue to grow in importance. This bill would strengthen the continuity of this vital mission,” said Congressman Garamendi, co-chair of the Congressional Air Mobility Caucus. “This bipartisan legislation would ensure that the Air Force maintains its strategic refueling capability as it transitions from the KC-10 to the KC-46 aircraft over the next few years. The bill requires that critically important acquisition and delivery milestones for the KC-46 are met before a KC-10 divesture could occur. This bill would help maintain stability in the military operations at Travis Air Force Base, our nation’s ‘Gateway to the Pacific.’”

“The KC-10 aircraft, which is the largest, newest, and most capable refueling aircraft currently in the military’s inventory, is a workhorse and vital to meeting air refueling mission taskings for the Arctic, Trans-Atlantic, and Pacific routes,” said Congressman Runyan. “As one of two primary homes to the KC-10, JB MDL is vital to carrying out these critical missions. The KC-10 has made a huge impact on mission readiness by combining long-range aerial refueling and cargo transport, and can be refueled in flight. It is crucial that we keep the KC-10 in full operation until the new KC-46 is completely ready for prime time.”

Runyan and Garamendi, both members of the House Armed Services Committee, teamed up last October and sent a letter to Secretary Hagel urging the DoD not to eliminate the entire fleet of KC-10 aircraft. Airbus Defense and Space adds military leases to its Inmarsat Global Xpress ® strategic agreement — Press Release

Inmarsat (LSE:ISAT.L), the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications services, has signed a further agreement with Airbus Defense and Space, appointing the international defence systems integrator as a Value Added Reseller (VAR) for Global Xpress (GX) military lease services, serving the Government market in Europe.

The announcement builds upon the strategic GX distribution partnership agreement concluded between the two companies
in December 2013. This new government agreement sets out leasing capacity on military Ka-band spot beams, in addition to subscription services already covered by the original agreement.

Andy Start, President, Inmarsat Global Government, said : “Adding military lease services to Airbus Defense and Space’s GX Value Added Reseller appointment was a natural progression. It positions Inmarsat’s unique global military Ka-band capability ideally to enable Airbus Defense and Space to augment MILSATCOM and support the concentrated, very high bandwidth operational needs of defence forces, for example airborne Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance.” Evert Dudok, Head of Communications, Intelligence & Security at Airbus Defense and Space, said: “As the number one military satcom operator in the world, having GX military and commercial Ka band as part of our new Aurora Global offering is a huge asset. This extension
of our GX strategic agreement with Inmarsat further strengthens a long-standing partnership harnessing Inmarsat’s next generation satellites.”

Global Xpress is the first globally available Ka-band broadband satellite network providing very high bandwidth services to a range of land, maritime and aero terminals, delivered through a resilient, secure waveform which is optimised for mobility. Integrated seamlessly with Inmarsat’s current L-band network, Global Xpress will ensure reliable communications in support of mission critical operations in the most challenging environments.

The first of three Global Xpress satellites is set to enter commercial service by mid-year 2014 with the full constellation
scheduled for deployment by the close of the year.
