Tactical Data Links: Timothy E. Snodgrass from Rockwell Collins to Address the Modern Battlespace

6th September 2011, London, UK

Timothy E. Snodgrass, Chief Architect, Government Systems, Rockwell Collins, will be discussing how to use different data classes without compromising battlespace performance at the Software Defined Radio conference, October 26th-28th 2011, at the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The resolution of how bursts of tactical data links and short messages can be used in combination with more complicated data, like full stream motion video, is a top priority for the modern battlespace as it optimises the communication flow, range of messages and data that fighters are able to send. The challenge for industry leaders such as Rockwell Collins is to develop applications that expand existing bandwidths through better spectrum management.

According to Rockwell Collins’ magazine- Horizons, the company will spend more than one billion dollars in 2011 on research and development to spur innovation in areas such as military communications. The company further states that they are eager to provide customers with the right solutions at the right time and that “this is important because (…) new technologies typically have three things in common- good features, good business strategy and good timing”.

In an attempt to modernise tactical communications and software defined radios, Snodgrass will be accompanied by fellow experts such as Dr. Michael Street, Senior Scientist Tactical Communications, NATO NC3A, who will address how cognitive SDR can be applied through interoperable tactical radio for multi-national operations.

Additional speakers to review advancements include:

• Major General Sander Schnitger, Director DOBBP, C41 & NEC, Netherlands MoD
• SES Mr Henry Muller, Director Space and Terrestrial Communications Directorate, US Army CERDEC
• Mr. Frederic Bouyer, CONTACT Programme Manager, DGA, French Ministry of Defence
• Tiberius Tomoiaga, Project Manager RIFS, Romanian Ministry of Defence

Speaker details are available on the event website at www.sdreurope.com, and the programme is available for download. In addition, visitors can access the Media Centre for the latest SDR news and developments.
Defence IQ invites serving Flag Officers 1 Star and above to attend the conference for free, by requesting a pass from Johanna Mikkela at defence@iqpc.co.uk.
