Other then the United States the United Kingdom has made the largest contribution to the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Like the U.S. military the British Defence Ministry has had to make significant investment in anti-mine and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) technology. This has included buying up-armored tactical vehicles as well as Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) ones to support transport and supply operations.

Another area that both nations have made efforts in is IED jammers and tactical data links. This has meant a lot of business for a variety of companies including U.S. ones in the British market.

The most recent contract related to this was one given to General Dynamics (GD) by the British for work on the Bowman tactical communications system. The goal of the $60 million contract is for GD to do work to make Bowman more supportive of anti-IED efforts.

IED can be defeated through a series of active and passive measures including better intelligence, better data distribution, jamming, armor and direct action against those trying to place IED. The more information available about operations including location of potential mines and IED the easier it is to remove or counter them.

As with the growing investment in UAV technology for ISR missions all of that intelligence collected has to be analyzed and distributed to the people who need it the most when they need it. This means investment in capable and redundant communications link. The GD work will help the Bowman tactical C4I system be better adapted to provide the necessary communications to do the anti-IED missions.

The U.S. and its Allies have spent millions on improving or upgrading their C3I systems. This contract is an example of that evolutionary upgrade to meet new threats and maximize troop performance and protection.
