AtHoc Congratulates U.S. Coast Guard on Winning Government Computer News’ Award for Emergency Mass Notification System Based on AtHoc Technology

nnovative AtHoc IWSAlerts Net-Centric Technology Can Send Emergency Alerts and Critical Information to U.S. Coast Guard Personnel and Partners

San Mateo, Calif. (September 15, 2010) AtHoc, Inc., the pioneer and leader in network-centric emergency mass notification systems, today congratulates the United States Coast Guard (USCG) for receiving the Government Computer News (GCN) Agency Award for its enterprise-wide Alert and Warning System 2.0 (AWS 2.0).

The USCG is being recognized by GCN for “Outstanding Information Technology Achievement in Government” for its AWS 2.0, which is built on AtHoc’s IWSAlerts™ net-centric emergency mass notification solution. The system is being used by more than 100 Coast Guard facilities to send alerts to 50,000 Coast Guard personnel and the maritime community. The system is the first of its kind within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and is utilizing the same technology and architecture that has been recognized as best practice within the Department of Defense (DoD).

“The U.S. Coast Guard is to be commended for its approach in using innovative IP-based mass notification technology that enables the agency to meet its missions effectively,” said Guy Miasnik, president and CEO of AtHoc. “AtHoc has experienced a collaborative partnership with the Coast Guard, and this award shows the depth of the team’s commitment to equip USCG personnel and their partners with a net-centric mass notification system to support the safeguarding of people and property. AtHoc IWSAlerts is the standard for the Navy’s emergency mass notification system and currently deployed across many DoD and DHS agencies, protecting more than 1.5 million military and homeland security personnel.”

“AWS 2.0 demonstrates an adoption of an innovative network-centric security and emergency communications system that can reach 50,000 USCG personnel and maritime industry members in minutes, thereby greatly enhancing the USCG’s ability to accomplish its many missions,” said USCG Lt. Commander Ted Kim. “AWS 2.0 can automate personnel recall and continuity of operations and can manage personnel accountability in emergencies. Most recently, the AtHoc-based system was used extensively to support the Coast Guard’s response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.”

AtHoc IWSAlerts provides a comprehensive, unified net-centric system for USCG that allows the agency to manage alert dissemination across multiple communications channels and devices, including telephony alerting, e-mail, SMS text messaging and other devices to help the USCG protect people and property in harm’s way. AWS 2.0 can notify active duty, reserve, auxiliary, civilian, maritime industry partners and other government agencies; can automate personnel recall and continuity of operations; and can manage personnel accountability in emergencies. This unified collaborative capability, which has been extensively used by numerous units around the USCG, provides a single enterprise solution able to send alerts concerning safety, security and environmental protection events to USCG personnel and maritime community members.

Over the years, the GCN Awards have come to symbolize some of the best and most notable IT accomplishments in advancing the work of government agencies. This year’s winning projects were selected from nearly 100 nominations submitted to GCN, based on the degree to which a given IT project improved an agency’s ability to operate more efficiently or serve the public more effectively.

The USCG is one of 10 recipients for this coveted award in 2010 and was selected from a field of 100. The USCG will be formally honored at the GCN Awards Gala, October 27 at the Ritz-Carlton, Tyson’s Corner in McLean, Va.
