The United State’s military placed an order with Relm Wireless Corp. for up to $750,000 worth of their Rapid Deployment Portable Repeater (RDPR). This follows the Florida’s company being awarded a piece of a new $750 million contract for digital radios. The RDPR allows the set up of networks rapidly while also extending the range of radios. The RDPR connects dissimilar radios across a common net.

This ability has been one the U.S. military and civil forces have sought as a way to improve communications during a mass event such as a natural disaster. During Hurricane Katrina the military found they had a hard time talking to civil responders. Under the lead of the Department of Homeland Security efforts have been made to fund compatible nets in the different states, cities and towns. The U.S. military has also invested in equipment like the RDPR that allows cross-agency communication.
