ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- In midsummer the U.S. Navy outraged some of its strongest supporters on Capitol Hill by proposing to end a next-generation destroyer program after building only two vessels, potentially squandering billions of dollars in development money.

    If the navy is only going to build only 2-3 of these, they ought to replace the helo deck with a couple of extra 155mm guns. With the cancellation of EGRM and BTERM, the navy will have virtually no extended range NGFS capability. Turning these into dedicated 4-gun platforms could make them quite valuable. Leave the helo and seal team capabilities to the LCS.

    Long range NGFS has always been an issue since the retirement of the WW II cruisers and BB. Missiles have been proposed to replace them, or extended range 5″ rounds. Of course, some will argue the aircraft is the NGFS of the current Navy.
