On 4 January the US Army placed a $17 M contract with Alliant Lake City Small Caliber Ammunition Company for 5.56mm rounds. There was no discussion of how much was bought, but the US military in Iraq and Afghanistan has used a large amount over the last four years. The Army was buying it from other countries across the world, including Israel. There have been other types of munitions that have run short, such as the 30mm cannon shell for the AH-64.
